I didnt buy an E30 for speed matey or claim my IS was really fast, i got it becuase of the way it looked, the main reason i dont own a 2.5 is down to the fact that for what it costs to run the performance is terrible, if i was after a performance car id have something else.

The only thing i'm after in a car these days is retro cool

I hate Type R's, back in the n/a days they were the worst car to race, oooops, I mean overtake at speed, they seemed to have 5mph more in each gear and that was in a good B25, how you 'did' one in a 'is' is amazing, I'm stunned.

My foreman had a 03 Type R and we used to have it everynight along the long slip road and I didn't ever get near to passing him and if I gained it was cos I had better traction of the roundabout. he then bought a 05 prodrive WRX and that wasn't much of a race although these days he doesn't race anymore since he gets a proper twatting these days

that's why I drive the fastest iS in the weest - yeee haaaa 35mpg most days & 38mpg when I'm holding up traffic up hills, I do like an iS, plus it looks sexual..

I think my 318IS is getting around 40-45mpg but thats just a guesstimate

OP - It's not for me to tell you how to drive, and for all I know you were mindful of blind corners, other traffic, stopping distances etc etc. I just hope the above story might make you and others think a little bit differently about "racing" other cars on the road. The faster car on the road, in my experience, is the car whose driver is prepared to take greater risks.

I had my future wife in the car, how could I be so stupid to put her life, my life, and other peoples lives at risk just because I wanted to be Billy Big Balls and prove I could drive faster than someone else? What if it was my car that left the road? What if the MR2 driver died?

I'm not here to patronize people, I enjoy driving quickly just like the next man. Not surprisingly the events on that day made me think very carefully about how I drive, and now if I want to "race" someone I do it on a track.

my 330bhp cosworth does better that 18mpg. your 2.5 must have been fooked. 40-45mpg in a 1.8 twin cam petrol seems very optimistic. that 1.8 diesel territory.

thats the whole point in buying a car and tuning it . i spent £10 grand making my touring fast.i didnt do that to potter to the shops at 30mph. i like to know what sort of cars it is a match for and what level of cars to aim for.

18mpg?! Something was not right with that as an M50B25 should do low thirtys with ease!

The best i've had out of my M20B25 is 27mpg.

There is no way an M42B18 will do anything in the 40's, no way!

The only point in modifying a car to increase power is so you can go out and race on the streets?

Has just having loads of power on tap for when you feel like going out for a blast when conditions and traffic allow not got anything to do with it?

I personally think that street racing is abhorrent. The risks to oneself and innocent bystanders is too high.

It's one thing to take your car and wring the s**t out of it on a deserted road in the dead of night. Or to hammer along a motorway.

It's quite another thing to race on a public highway for some sort of perceived "glory" !

People who do that deserve jail terms, not just disqualification and fines. As far as I'm concerned if a fatality resulted it should be classed as first degree murder.

For me I worked my way up from a m10 318i to my Alpina. I've never gone for the power but more for the feeling the package gives me. I love the sound of the Alpina engine and even though it goes like stink ( even by todays standards ) I know I am a very nervious behind the wheel so never try to race on twisty stuff. Last time a span I even ran march109 for advice LOL.

What I'm getting at is you can have a fast car for the simple pleasure of owning it.

Constantly trying to say that they're "baby M3's" can compare to a 325i.... I've had fifteen 318is's and only three 325i's. I can honestly say that the 325i is a better car in every way.

It's only at this point in my life though that I can easily afford to own and run a 325i though. I previously also suffered from the little man symptom and tried to fight the 318is's corner all the time.

Needless to say once I could afford a 325i the 318is was a distant memory and it will stay that way.

BMW aren't famous for their 4-pots. They just happen to make them for people who can't afford their glorious 6-pots.
