I bashed my bulkhead in, and I think it's a useful thing to do for engine position three, and it doesn't cost anything!

I'm sure my 325i gear linkage went on the same side as the M30 one...?
I can't see it making a difference, not 100% sure though.

I think I put it in the same way as the m20 box iirc.
But if it isn't, it's easy enough to do anyway.
Lee, the box will come out easy, loosten the engine mounts, do NOT TAKE OFF THE NUT!! and tilt the engine and there snough clearence in the tunnel for the box to slide out.Did it twice on mine when the flywheeel has to come back out.So don't worry too much mate

Well its in but not plumbed in,
i aint touched it for a couple of days and today it was a spur of the moment decision to get it in the bay,took me an hour an half and the only nightmare i had was getting it on the mounts but with a little help off the wife (she was controlling the hoist ) it went on no bother,ive got it in position 3 and with plenty room behind the baulkhead (well about an inch,lol)





First job to do now is reconnect the prop,gear linkage,etc..then get the down pipes on and see where i stand with the exhaust,(imy) for now ill be mating the 325i system up to it to get it on the road but in the near future ill be getting a 50mm twin pipe custom system made up.
im in two minds what to do about the rad as all ive got to use is my M20 one because the E34 one dont fit

If the weather isnt too bad tomorrow it might be fired up,(without down pipes of course )

I've read that the E28 rad is a good one to use

Have you tried the scrappy's for the right E34 one?

lee looking good, but i can see one problem,

that is the elec fan mate, it should have gone in b4 the engine as its going to be awkward to get it in and do the mounts for it.

There isn't alot of room for hands to get in and drills so the mounts can be fixed.
Sorry mate if i put a dampner on it but i found that when i did mine,

No panic rav! i fitted the fan before the engine went in,drilled,mounted and tested

Then took it out whilst the engine was being put in

Theres a 3.64 open diff on at the mo so ill see how i go with that,i want a slipper but not sure what ratio to go for.

ITS ALIVE!!!!

Started underneath and connected the 325i prop up (perfect length) and sorted all the gear linkage business out,got the down pipes on to see how im going to mate it up to the exhaust and the curve of the pipes seem to match the E30 floor pan,took them back off and started up top with the heater hoses.

The hose that goes to the bottom stub went on with no fuss after being cut to size,the top stub hose on the other hand ive had to make a hybrid hose with the E34 front half and E30 rear half,the top stud sticks up at an angle and couldnt get the original hose on without it kinking.

Here's the hose i knocked up!




And both hoses on,i might try and re-route the top hose though




Then fitted new fuel hoses,the others were a bit




After this i was on a roll and sorted the loom out

coil is on the clutch fluid mount using an E30 strap,and the earth leads reach perfect on the suspension turret.
I put the relays into an E30 cover and they wedged nicely up where the the loom goes through the baulkhead





connected the ECU up and secured under the dash after rotating it 180 dgrees,connected the main live up and after this i didnt realise i could test it,

so i couldnt resist!

after a couple of turns it fired,without downpipes of course,

Only let it run for about 5 seconds (twice )


After this i test fitted the M20 rad and here's the clearance






Got to work out the top hose though



Im a VERY happy boy though!

Looking good, and I bet it was ~LOUD~ too.
I remember mine too.

That rad's spacing with the dizzy cap is the same as mine, tighter than a virgins p###y

Get the rad and stops pis5ing about later mate.

Imy Lees diff will be quicker to 60, but mine is a better cruiser on the motorway.
Swings and roundabouts really and depends on what you want the car for.Mine is alot of travelling up and down the A45 to Cov and back so does me.

Lee, when urs is running, want a quick trip in her to see what diff the diff makes

Yep, goes from the front, underneath the inlet manifold bracket, and then out and over the servo and into the heater matrix.

ahaa, the obligitory exhaust-less M30 first fire up! I think we all did that! sound rather like a spitfire don't they! (or should that be a ME109?)

oh, you'll need to cut that top rad hose a bit whatever rad you use. it'll need to stretch a fair bit to get onto the radiator stub so if like me you're unlucky, the old hose will split after a while. if you leave it a bit longer than necessary, you'll at least get to cut it shorter and re-clamp for a bit if it does split.

they're about £45/50 new iirc so no huge drama

Look what ive done to the freshly painted inlet mani not even sure how ive done it,could be the off the jubilee clip on the top hose

I did the same to mine, but i didn't tell anyone, but boy was i annoyed.
Hose should cover it.

i managed to spray coolant all over my freshly painted rocker cover.. loose bleed screw
it left a matt finish watermark that won't clean off oh well, it's better than 2mm of flaking crusty aluminium oxide!

i hit the back of the rocker cover too when it was going in cant see it though as the loom covers it


Note to self: buy some bubble wrap next time i drop a freshly painted lump in a car.

when i had the head off recently, i decided to clean up and paint the manifold and rocker cover, took like 3 years to get round to that!

when i refitted it all, i left the spare crusty rocker cover on to save scratching it while tinkering, makes it more annoying that i did mess it up within a week ho hum.

weather has been a bit rough round here today,flash floods,even had hail

Managed to source an E34 rad though,but the flush test was'nt very good,filled it with hot water then felt around it and the bottom was cold (about 4 inch up) and the top was hot so its blocked at the bottom
the m20 rad actually holds more water,you can see the size difference in the pictures







been trying to flush it clean but its not having it,any tips? like is there something i can leave in it over night then flush in the morning,like drain buster but for rads lol


left it like that for about 2 hours


jobs left to do

Radiator
Exhaust
Tidy it up
Then test drive
