BMW E30 M-Tech cabrio, V8

Ok, at last i got some time for my cabrio.

Took the engine out and made all kinds of little things. Hopefully i'll get exhaust manifolds and exhaust piping properly welded this weekend and couple more things done so i can test all stuff together once more before painting and final engine bay weldings.

Clearance between rocker and strut is negligible! B uggar all in any case!

Notice: No room on the bulkhead for any type of braking system, unless you're mounting a pedal box to it.

Reserved a time for painter in the end of this month so i'll start putting it all together on easter holidays

E34 V8 mounts and 10mm spacer (total height should be around 75mm). E39 525tds mounts would've been plug'n'play in E30 subframe and 75mm in height. That i learned later

And Jonsku's setup uses subframe spacers as well, which might explain the subtantial difference in height between your V8 conversions.

Edit: seems like botf of you use subframe spacers. It probably comes down to the mounts then.

He has less clearance than mine when I didn't have spacers. I'll get some pics later.

hmm nearly bought the standard mounts last week, i might check out those 525 ones instead as i'll be using subframe spacers like jonsku

The subframe spacer doesn't affect the needed mount height.


Anyways, i got all the weldings done in the engine bay today and did some priming. In the weekend i hopefully have time and the exhaust manifolds back to put it all together last time before painter.

I'm a bit unhappy with the brake discs (the black passivation didn't succeed as expected) but that was kind of an experiment. Well, next i've to bore new holes to the discs and see whether i can reinforce them a bit..

Audi 312x25 front discs
BMW 294x19 rear discs

Noup, gonna redrill the discs. That might be a problem but we'll see. If i don't get them done properly i'll buy expensive 4x100 discs on www.300mm.de


Damn, tried the clutch yesterday and realised it doesn't work so (i measured the clutch and thought it'd work without the spacer but no, it won't) so i'll have to pull the whole package out once more.

Well, maybe this is lesson learned..

Yes but because i've new flywheel the total height is about 12-15mm less than original setup so i've to use spacer between the clutch fork and pressure bearing.

Anyways, i pulled the engine out yesterday with help of couple friends and putted all back again so now it's working fine
Driveshaft, water pump etc are also bolted on so next i've to bolt dashboard etc interior things..

You can, but pedal feel is really bad as well as effort. I'm thinking of going to custom mounted pedals ie: top/floor mount to be able to adjust the pedal ratio. I'm using a twin M/C with no servo and it's alot of effort for not much braking! I mounted my ECU in the engine bay under the cover from an E34. Suits it better, but might need to make it more solidly mounted.

I'm guessing his battery tray has his ABS setup.

Yes you could but i see no sense in that kind of setup unless you're building strictly race car.

ABS pump, siren for alarm, power distribution box.

I built a place for ECU and relays on the original mounting location, the wires are really close being long enough.

I bought Walbro fuel pump, good enough to +500hp so i guess it'll be enough for this setup
Friend of mine is using original in-tank fuel pump in his E30 V8 so that's one option too but my fuel pump was in such a bad condition that i decided to replace it with something more powerful.
