This sounds interesting as I salvaged the rocker cover from my 1602 to make into a decoration for my wall (true bmw nut style having parts on the wall).
So, from reading this, I gather the best way is to first:
clean the thing down good and proper with some carb cleaner or brake cleaner
then a coat of etch primer I saw someone mention??
next a top coat of the wrinkle paint or dimple paint as the previous post recommends
remove the paint from the tops of the bits you want to polish before the paint sets hard
then polish off the lines and the BMW badge with something abbrasive like t-cut or autosol?
let me know if that sounds about right and I think I might soon have me a nice pretty new wall decoration.

I used normal satin black spray then took the rocker cover and inlet manifold to work and skimmed the tops on the milling machine to get a nice even factory finish on the stripes and letters.
No need for high temp paint, the rocker cover doesn't get that hot ! and it's not peeling or bubbling after 6 months hard use.
See my sig pic for the end result.
Cheers,
Iain T

Not very clean, and in that picture it makes it look like its really dull... but I wanted to be different... when I pull the engine again, I'm going to re paint it the same colour, but with a black intake manifold, block and head... nice to change things up.
BTW, there a 333i Turbo over here, thats whole engine is painted red... actually looks pretty hot.
