Since my discussion with jhonno about supercharging my m50 and having been out in his S50 i want more power! What superchargers are people running and what would be the best supercharger for the M50. Any rough idea on prices would be very helpful also.
Cheers

Andrew.. You know I'm a mine(field) of technical advice and my consultancy fees will probably only run to a few select E30 spares for the project cer....

I am thinking of going this route my self , emerald ecu and may be a eaton m90 , would love a twin screw but they are serious money so. I will propably go with a eaton and standard c/r and 7/8 pounds of boost , I will need a good intercooler set up as the roots type blows make a lot of heat especially if you wind the boost up .

Wouldn't a rotrex setup be a better bolt on solution, but you are probably looking at £5K by the time you've got the charger kit, sorted a decent intercooler & plumbing and then ECU and mapping.

Interesting thread! Must keep an eye on this now that I have a spare M50 engine and I'm not really sure what to do with it

Now driving an E46 320D touring

A centrifugal supercharger would be a lot easier to install but they dont boost as well low down + roots blowers are cheap as chips and i reckon with a good charge cooler and bypass valve it would make a great m50 and on . I have changed my idea of lowering c/r since I read a book by Corky Bell on supercharging .

Be careful using his equations from that book. It is known to contain plenty of typos/errors. Ive found quite a few whilst researching a s/c set-up.dicko wrote: I have changed my idea of lowering c/r since I read a book by Corky Bell on supercharging .
Gaffa tape is like "the force" - it has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together.
There's nothing that shouts "Poor Workmanship" more than wrinkles in the Gaffer tap

The corky bell book is a good starting place... But like the guys say there's a lot more comprehensive technical books out there. I might even have some left over after the great uni library clearout of 2004.. I shall have a look for you Andrew.
I think a supercharger is an awesome idea, and I would urge you to go for a large centrifugal type with either a very efficient air to air or a nice water cooled charge cooler. That way you can retain a higher compression ratio (keeping the charge temps down).
There are loads of chaps out there with more practical experience of these things, I'm just a uni book monkey.. lol

Andrew, what's under the bonnet of that track day toy you have in the workshop?
You need nothing more, it's all there, just swap it in, make up some more brackets and you're sorted. I'm pretty sure that is a M90 so has plenty for a M50. It needs the mods doing you already know about so why not save the hassle and strap the fecker on, making the new bits as you need too. It'll still be much mich less than everyone else.
That just leaves you to persaude your Bro now, it would certainly be the most obvious way.
Unlike Jhonna I don't charge for my help
