M6 has the M5 lump and carbon roof and wings still wouldn't want to have a whack in one though. :(

Yep e28 m5

I would have the e46 csl, less weight better handling etc
But its a close call

Now the M6...
Well that is an even closer call! Better looking, faster etc etc than the m5

Eh?
By whack I prsume you mean crash/stack/prang?

Why not? It's going to be a hell of a lot safer than an e30!

Lordschleife
Have you seen a formula one car crash, they just explode all over the place.
If you crash on a public road (and at the speed the M6 goes) you normally don't just hit a crash barrier and stop you hit the kerb bounce off the oncoming car, take out a few trees and end up upside down in someones lounge. :screwy:

I like the idea of a steel shell and always will.

Yes they're designed to do that to dissapate the energy of the crash

And how is that any different to the speeds the M5 or many other cars will go?
Martinaston wrote: I like the idea of a steel shell and always will.
Err well CF should be lighter and stronger.
You can't compare the speeds F1 cars crash at to the speeds of regular every day driving.
I wouldn't hesitate to drive one.

Out of interest, what do you think of Lotus Elises?
Would you drive one of them with an aluminium bonded body?
(basically glued together)

Robin

Nope
I think track cars should stay on the track.

You said

I don't want to dissipate the energy of the crash because i wouldn't be wearing a five point harness, I'd want it built like a tank to go through wall's :)

Then it'll transfer all the energy to you and you're squishy, easily bruisable internal organs
Not to mention basal skull fractures...

Oh and the bonded aluminium shell of an elise is much stronger and more likely to stay intact than a welded steel shell.

Not trying to be harsh, or argumentative here, just provoke some thought/discussion

Nope it would only transfer all the energy to me if the car stopped, I want one so heavy you don't notice the small ford you just drove through
(the car not a river)

As for the bonded lotus that sounds like it would bounce around until your brain is scrambled.

Brother-in-law left Hockenheim an hour ago with a certain Renault V10 on board. Will that do? I could give him a call, and see if he'll divert.

If you have a car that heavy it'll handle like an oil tanker though, I can see where you;re coming from, but I'd rather my car be more on the fun side of things than the safe (not that I want an unsafe car)

After all you only live once, and I'd rather live a shorter fun/interesting life than a long boring one!

Lets see what the NCAP rating of the M6 is when it comes out eh?
Cheers,
Robin

No I didn't.
The bugger's been texting me all afternoon to wind me up!
Flies out to Hockenheim Saturday night, sees GP from F1 enclosure, packs up and drives to Hungary, flies home, flies back to Hungary next Saturday, sees GP again, and drives home, AND GETS PAID PLENTY.
Doesn't even like F1 particularly either.

Volvo have been sticking it to the NCAP mob according to todays Times,
saying they don't test as thoroughly as Volvo and the European manufacturers have been designing the cars just to get high scores for the tests.
Not sure if Volvo are realy concerned or there just blowing there own trumpet. :?

Who knows, but at least NCAP gives us a bit of an idea.

Probably a bit of both of what you say at the end of the day.

Anyway an e30 wouldnt get any stars (though its strong for an 80s design) and I think an e36 only gets one!
Shows you how far safety has come

Robin

I think when it comes to cars designed in the 80's safety is a total game of chance.

1. seatbelts
2. ???

Depends on the type of crash and luck too.
Yeah a lorry at that speed you probably dont have a good chance
I binned my 325i at 60-70mph in the wet - straight into a tree, walked out without a scratch, but I was lucky - hit on the passenger side.

I realised after though I probably would have been serioulsy injured or even dead if it had been eg. in my Honda CRX & was quite shaken for the next week (I'd crashed a car before at around 30-40 and walked away without even the slightest amount of shock or fear afterwards) It took me about a year before I had full confidence to drive on the limit again.
Cheers,
Robin

Quite but e30's are built a lot more robust than a lot of 80's cars
Which would you rather stack, a mid 80's ford escort or mid 80's e30?

Anyway, it concentrates the mind on driving and not making any mistakes
'must not crash! must not crash!'

Cheers,
Robin
