There are so many engine codes and conversions I get confused.

Ive used a plastic winged clio one, used e30 master cyl just put a spacer in the master cyl as the shaft on the lio one is shorter than the e30 servo. Golf gti one works aswell. If you need a servo give us a call theres a bloke near us that frags them.

is the braking effected using a smaller set up?

is the plastic winged clio the one that came out roughly on a v-reg?

I believe that the VW Golf servo bolts right in without any modification from what I can remember.

firstly let get one thing straight as there are 3 diffrent parts to what were talking about and using the wrong names for parts your discribing is going to confuse, no you cant use a e30 master cylinder if using a golf one or french crap. but yes you can use the e30 servo ( which is the black part btw) not named the master cylinder ethier!

the golf mk2 ones fit just fine there 23 quid from gsf or theres a few on the bay, take ya pick new or old,

and to just remind you.......... the servo IS NOT the master cylinder!!

the servo (black part) is being changed ready for an M50 conversion as the E30 one comes into contact with the inlet manifold.

as you know i have a brake issue in another thread and it has been pinned down to the master cylinder,
whilst im sorting out this issue i may aswell tackle the servo 'downsizing' while im there.

kill two birds with one stone!

Golf one isn't a direct fit either iirc..

The Clio one is regarded as being the best currently..

Zimmer,i cant see how you got confused!

i opened a thread in the tech section about a brake problem,it was pinned down to the 'master cylinder' so thats that thread sorted and finished with.

i didnt want to buy a new E30 master cylinder if in a few months down the line id need a different one to fit the clio/golf servo (M50 conversion)

hence why i opened a thread in the 'engine swap section',
asking which was the best combination to use,in the monster m50 sticky there is mention of using an audi master cylinder!

are we clear now? :D

You Can use the original e30 Master cylinder with a clio servo I did and it works fine , you need to fit alonger treaded bar into the actuator rod as the clio one is shorter and I had the same result as Dan better brakes than before , and as for the french crap statement , the one I got was manufactured by "ATE" the same as the e30 original .

All the clio servo's ive had have been Bosch, if they were made by valeo or whatever other french place I would have probably used a golf servo :P

Plastic winged clios have immensly over assisted brakes IMO. I have to be careful when in the old dears DCI chariot.

By using all the parts, does this translate to really 'powerful' assistance in the e30 Dan?

I dont find them overly assisted and most diffinetly not like french cars I have driven( overlly soft ) they are not to hard you have to apply a fair bit of pressure to lock up even in the wet , they may be a little soft for a track car but I find them great really easy to judge where the limit is .

First time round when I originally discovered the Clio servo would fit in the E30 bulkhead I used the Clio MC also, instead of using the recommended 20 year old golf servo and cut a piece of rod to lengthen the actuator I went on a mission in the local scrappy with an E30 servo/MC in hand looking to find something that would simply 'bolt in wholesale'
Like you say the clio brakes are pretty sharp, which made me think it was a good plan, but the MC is only about 20-21mm diameter which isnt ideal for the E30 calipers, it stopped the car well but the pedal was too long, if the abs cut in big time the pedal would sink too far and leave you with nothing!
Ive also tried it with a similar Bosch MC from a citroen van which was 23mm straight through, but this had the opposite effect, useless on the fronts but kept locking the rears up, so I bolted up a 750i MC with a spacer which turned out to be balanced about right but the servo just hasnt got the guts to move it enough so the pedal is very hard.
Havnt tried any others, but in my experience the E30 MC is by far the best 8)

The servo doesnt need any adjustment,you just put a piece of threaded bar into the end of the master cylinder then bolt upto the servo,effectively extending the push rod.
I am using standard E30 M/C on mine and brakes are better than standard servo.Benjy is using standard E30 M/C but his has ABS too,again brakes are excellent.OBs is using 23mm Audi M/C and hard to tell the difference to E30 M/C to be honest.

Not all Golf servos are suitable, if you choose to go for a Golf one then take your E30 MC with you to try it. The problem I came across when looking in a breakers was the opposite to what people have had to do with the Clio servo, the push rod in the servo was too long so when the MC was bolted to it the piston was almost fully depressed. The outcome of this would either be the brakes being locked on all the time or you would only get 25% of the intended travel on the MC piston. This is a pain as the lovely little VW servos, circa Mk1 Gti's iirc, are perfect for the much larger S50 inlet plenum but probably makes no difference on your M50 one.....

The clio servo i used needed a spacer between the servo and the master cylinder, think it was approx 15mm.

It needs a spacer.
Cut the threaded bar to about 15-16mm in length and slide it in the back of the M/C :wink:

Just what I have done,I discovered that not all Clio servo's have a yoke compatable with the E30 relay box,the first one I bought the yoke was too short and I am fairly certain I buggered the servo seals when I welded the E30 yoke to the pushrod :o: The second one bought and fitted this week was spot on and the brakes are no heavier than the standard car.
