Hartge H36 Project (E30 M3 with S38 M5 engine)

I would keep the rear end if you can just incase the shell you source need sections grafting in.
Just looked at realoem and the 3.6 e34 m5 uses the same pad as the e30 m3 and has a 300mmx20mm ventilated disc - so fairly certain they are m5 rear brakes. Quite probably m5 calipers on the front, but there's no custom adaptor to be seen.
Right, todays mystery find was this;


No part number, has H 3.6 written on it like the ECU so perhaps it's something which is programmable? Any ideas?
Also got a first look behind the carpet at the front bulkhead, looks to be heavily modified. I'll take the dash and carpet out tomorrow and get a photo.

So theo have u got the shell at urs or did u have to strip down at the breakers????

Been dismantling the car a bit more this evening, the dash is out and in the bin, wiring looms are separated and the engine will be ready to come out shortly. The special washer jets are out, i'm going to copy these and fit a set to my track car which has a single skin GRP bonnet. I noticed on the OBC that it has a coding plug from an M3 sport evo which is strange. Where can I do a check with the vin number to tell what model m3 this was when it left the factory?
Anyway, enough rambling on. Here's a pic of the bulkhead molested by the fair hands of Herbert Hartge and co.

I've still not got an answer on that black box, any clues what it is?

I did see that multiple start thing when browsing realoem and wondered if it could be related. I asked about this thing on a 5 series forum and no one has recognised it. And it also has H3.6 written on it like the ECU which suggests it's not a standard component.

my educated guess to the black box mystery would be the 155mph delimiter maybe?
Theo, go to your main dealer with the chassis number or ring boybimmer as he can check on the german system and find out the exact spec of the base car for you.

I think the little module on the back of the ECU is the speed delimiter, this black box remains a mystery.
I've been removing the air conditioning system this morning (heater box was tricky thanks to the modified bulkhead) turns out the car has the very rare automatic heater control so it will maintain a constant temperature on it's own accord. I've always wondered what that little vent in the heater control panel was for, seemingly it's for a temperature sensor for the automatic heater control.

EWS came out from jan 1995 best way to check if the key blade is silver (non ews) or bronze colour (with ews).


The B38 replaced the B36 in 92/3 did it not? If thats the case and EWS didn't come out till jan 95 then surely that black thing is nothing to do with EWS as the engine used for the conversion is a B36?
It's a standard silver key, so looking unlikely that it's EWS related. I didn't get round to tracing the wires today, that can wait until the engine is out and on a stand.

Nice! Reminds me of an old RWD Escort me or Gareth had, can't remember which one or our many (4-door Mk2 or 2-door Mk1 Mexico rustbucket) but that area of the firewall was made out of a STOP road sign!
Hint from a real brake geek: look up the part numbers on the brake pads themselves...
