ok people im fed up with playing wit this 318 m40 lump.what i want to know is there any engine and box out of the newer beemers that will fit into the e30 without too much arsing about.m3 lump would be nice but to much chopping needed i think.dont say m30 because getting one of them with a manual box is impossible and i was thinking of running gear from 99 up model

Might not be worth overlooking the m42 engine, faster engine, torquier, revier chain driven not belt driven and virtually plug and play. Its the conversion I am doing, and would probably be the easiest conversion!

Surely an M50 swap fits the bill perfectly here?

M50 is out of an E36, the E36 328 is an M52 though
Hope that helps

4cyl wise there is only the
m42, m43 and m44
m42 being the easiest and possibly the best, the m44 (later e36 IS engine may be slightly faster but not as revvy)
or you could heavily tune an m10

You can find some decent one's with around 130-140k on the clock. I've seen a couple of M30 engined cars with about 130k on them

Have a look on ebay, there are a couple of E34 M30's with manual box. Why not get a auto and then just change the box to manual?

New new new engines will be a massive ballache to fit due to all the electrical gubbins attached. M50/M52 sounds the best option, fairly high mileage isn't much of an issue if you can get some service history. E36 M42/M44 will needs lots of E30 bits to fit, you may as well get an E30 M42 for all the extra cost of fitting and E36 item, but they're at best 18 years old now.
Not in E30s any more

E36 - 3 series
E34 - 5 series
I would recommend getting a whole car, E34 is recommended for M30 swap
Type in 535i in ebay and check out the cars

Best option is an M50 engine from E34 or E36.Only difficult bit is the exhaust manifold/downpipe and possibly engine loom.I bought a complete E34 for £350...
