The 328's are awesome and quick and the sports look cool....A few years ago I didnt know if to buy an E30 325i Sport or an E36 328i Sport...In the end I went for the E30 because id always wanted one but I kinda regretted it because the 328's are quicker and probably a better all round car.320ise wrote:all over the show at the min! not sure what i want! heart says 328i sport GO on! head says nice juice bills on a 318is still nippy be SENSABLE!
Ive had the E36 318is with the M44 though and it was Faultless....Dont think you will be dissapointed but its nowhere near in the same league as the 328 in terms of power.....But like you say thyre cheaper to run

The m44 is an economy version of the M42. The earlier lump has sodium filled exhaust valves, forged cranks too?

does that mean that the m44 is not as good? might be getting a e36 i.s and just want to know what the best engine is, is the m42 the same as the e30 one? bar the intake manifold. also does the m44 have a 4 branch as standard as the m42?

Correct, although the M42 doesn't have the power or torque of the M44, it's a hell of a lot more lively.Simon13 wrote:The m44 is an economy version of the M42. The earlier lump has sodium filled exhaust valves, forged cranks too?
Both the M44 and M42 have tubular exhaust manifolds, and the E30 and E36 M42 engines are practically the same, bar the sumps, intake and exhaust manifolds, pulley setup and mounts. Also the M44 has a more advanced engine management system, with more sensors and stuff (technical term).

The M44 doesn't seem to sh!t itself like the M42's can, theres no profile gasket to worry about on the M44. They both have their vices like M20's but a good one will do the miles, power and take a good hiding

Is profile gasket an easy job, while I got the engine out an all or is it summat you would suggest leaving to a mechanic. No guarantees as to wether it has been done. Also is he actual gasket cheap?

it was a bmw recall job, most should have been done. Just something to bear in mind. You'd know if it was shot as there would be water coming out the timing covers!

Yes, the 1.9 E36 engine will ultimately give more power. Its what you do to it to achieve it.320ise wrote:what is the better lump of the two and does the extra 100cc make any difference as from what i read there both 140bhp, does one have more pulling power_
Having said this, the con rods are weaker than the E30 ones.
E30 M3 Unichip Alpha N style conversions, this is the ultimate for extracting the best out of your S14 M power car.
