hi guys found this site a few days back and must say its great. anyway i have driven e30 motors now for the last 3 years. my first was a diamond black 318i that was mint!!! 89 plate with 71k on the clock from jersey:) anyway in march this year a golf gti decided to end my run with this motor and took out my back quater and pretty much the boot aswell. i have now purchased a black 325i cabby 87 plate its a quick drive full of mods. will upload pics when i get 2 mins. anyway after driving for about 20 mins on the road bypass ect...
i decided to indulge in a mcdonalds to my horror as i waited in the drive thru. the temp gauge was rising and rising you get the picture it went almost to red so i chucked heaters on full and that bought me enough time to get the car parked and to cool him down. since then its been flushed there is no mixing of oil and water the radiator looks like its had better days but it does not overheat when idle or when driving only after its been driving fast ect.. and then idle. any advice from you guys would be a great help. cheers martin south wales.

warm welcome mate
maybe a fudged up viscous coupling for the fan?
seems the most logical thing to me as there is not oil/water mixing so probably not a cracked head, not sure tho

hi cheers for the welcome. the engine to be honest looks and feels great. the fan has a few chunks taken out of it but looks like its working. and evrything looks realy clean under the cap. we are thinking maybe a blocked radiator? but not sure. i removed the thermostat today and then foolishly tested against my brother in his 325 sport just to get the car upto temp. when we returned the neddle again started to creep. anyone else had this exact problem? cheers martin.

do u get lots of white smoke when the engine is cold out of the exhaust when driving for say the first 5 miles?
Sorry to say but the 2.5 has a weakness for cracking heads when the coolant is not changed every 1-2 years in it's lifetime. But it could be the viscous so worth doing the newspaper trick first to see if it is knackered as this won't be helping things!!!!

hi no smoke at all from the car. to be honest i dont think it will overheat standing around for a long long time. its only after a drive and then when its ticking over it starts creeping. ill try the newspaper thing. can someone point out the things to change if the newspaper thing dont work. and also any signs other than oil and water mixing if its a cracked head?

Hey all, for my two cents worth, have you thought about the water pump? My 320 had a similar problem and after chasing around with sensors/thermometers etc, it turned out to be the water pump. I don't know how you check it though

Stop worrying the poor bloke! These are classic syptoms of hot weather, a bit of heat soak, and a duff viscous coupling.
Get the car up to temp and let it idle with the bonnet closed. After a minute or two, as the temp begins to creep up, you should hear the sound of rushing air as the fan clutch locks up and drives the fan hard. Rev the engine a little, and you can easily hear if it's engaged.
Keep an eye on the temp gauge all the time of course, and don't cook it.
Get the fan blades changed as well if they are chipped - they have been known to disintegrate.

The biggest problem you seem to have is the viscus fan get a new one and that should cue your problem

Hi
I had exactly the same problem last week, changed the viscous coupling -part cost less than Ԛ£40 and took less than an hour. Even in todays heat wave the car runs cooler. Jetblasted the rad and the heat exchanger for the air con and all problems were cured!!

Keep an eye on the meets section, we have some regular meets down here in South Wales, normally meet at Dowlais Top near Merthyr, not too far from you.
