cut the kick panels out for 6.5" speakers and mount them to it with a plain black mesh grill they look good, almost like factory, the previous owner did it in my 316i and it sounded cool loads of bass too

Neil,

They are 3mm thick stainless steel.

I asked a local metal fabrication place if they could make them, and they had another place laser cut them for me. It took a while to get them though

The problem with this is the thickness. As soon as you add any extra thickness, you can't open the glovebox.

seems like a lot of effort when you can mount them to the kickpanels and with plain black speaker grills they look factory :D

there is a thread somewhere with some pics of 6.5" speakers mounted like that but i cannot find it

8O

But they'd sound terrible and just rattle like shit. Mounting a 6.5" cone to a thin piece of plastic?

The point is to mount them to dampened sheet metal re-inforced with steel plate / MDF.

Just screwed to the actual kick panel plastic?

A rigid mounting surface is kinda like rule number 1 for speaker mounting - but then you say that and it just makes me think people talk crap.

Bizarre.

honestly it did sound good, and yes it was just screwed into the plastic, and the plastic was screwed down with a few extra screws i think

Get a decent 5a. there is no need for a 6.5 at all.

There doesn't seem quite enough room to do that on mine. And does the glovebox still opens without to wrestle it, with the spacer under the bonnet release lever mounting?

glove box opens without any fouling, as for the release lever, i cut it down by about half, you can see a rough edge on the photo, still strong enough to open the bonnet without any problems.

i have heard you can fit an audi one as they are shorter, and/or they opperate upside down compared to ours, someone may be able to tell you which one.

I read this in one of the articles somewhere way back when I first joined the zone. I think it was an audi tt lever!
