cut the kick panels out for 6.5" speakers and mount them to it with a plain black mesh grill they look good, almost like factory, the previous owner did it in my 316i and it sounded cool loads of bass too

They are 3mm thick stainless steel.
I asked a local metal fabrication place if they could make them, and they had another place laser cut them for me. It took a while to get them though

The problem with this is the thickness. As soon as you add any extra thickness, you can't open the glovebox.cliffybabe wrote:i might go the mdf route and mkae some new kick panel and carpet them

seems like a lot of effort when you can mount them to the kickpanels and with plain black speaker grills they look factoryian332isport wrote:http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... ic&t=30618320dave wrote:is there any info on fittin 6.5" speakers in place of the old ones?

But they'd sound terrible and just rattle like shit. Mounting a 6.5" cone to a thin piece of plastic?
The point is to mount them to dampened sheet metal re-inforced with steel plate / MDF.

Just screwed to the actual kick panel plastic?
A rigid mounting surface is kinda like rule number 1 for speaker mounting - but then you say that and it just makes me think people talk crap.
Bizarre.

There doesn't seem quite enough room to do that on mine. And does the glovebox still opens without to wrestle it, with the spacer under the bonnet release lever mounting?hongkongfuey wrote:mine are only 5 1/4 but you get the idea

glove box opens without any fouling, as for the release lever, i cut it down by about half, you can see a rough edge on the photo, still strong enough to open the bonnet without any problems.
i have heard you can fit an audi one as they are shorter, and/or they opperate upside down compared to ours, someone may be able to tell you which one.
