If you go for the conversion kit it may be different, the ones that are advertised for about £60. I just replace the bulbs in mine and they seem to work so not too fussed. I'm just trying to find out weather you can intsall HID bulbs in the angel eyes rings.

As mentioned above, the ones you have aren't HID/Xenon lights matey, they're just a different coloured bulb!

The link I posted near the top of the thread details a HID kit complete with ballasts etc to fully convert your car to HID lights for under £40.

NayC - There may well be a way to do the full beams too but general consensus is that if you have HIDs in your dipped beam, you won't ever need the main beam as the light output is so strong from the HID dipped beam!

Mr. ImysE30 - You do not have HID headlamps! You have 'pretend' ones that are probably dimmer than the originals, since they are blue (ish) simply by filtering out the red end of the spectrum!! HIDs are a discharge lamp, that strikes on a voltage of a thousand or two volts.
HIDs aren't really suitable for main beam use, as 1) frequent switching shortens their life dramatically, 2) they have a warm up time of a few seconds.
Cars that have HID main beams usually use a mechanical shutter arrangement to control the beam.

So its not advisable to get the main beams.

Are these good ones then?

NayC, those are the very ones i have so im saying yes, they're good

But they do not like being flashed so are unsuitable for main beams, you will just knacker them.

The E30 main beam units have exceptionaly good reflectors so a decent pair of normal halogen bulbs will do, as i said on page 1 i used OSRAM cool blues which are not that expensive and are suposed to be about 4000k colour temp...

Heres a pic compareing them to normal halogens in the front fogs so you can see the contrast.

Ooh nice. What bulbs did you need from that guy. He says you need to state the blubs you want and the colour and it doesn't make much sense. I know i want 4300k bulbs but is there a certain type to be used in e30s?

A little research never hurt anyone did it?! :x You need H1 bulbs and then select the temp. you want e.g. 4300k, 6000k etc etc...

Good good. I think i'll be purchasing some today...

And then some fake bulbs for the head beams to get rid of that nasty yellow light. Anyone know some good aftermarket bulbs for the main beams? and are the fog lights the same?

A colour temperature of 6000K is a colour temperature of 6000K.
If you have two bulbs rated at 6000K which are a different colour to each other, one of the manufacturer's is lying!
Exactly. Factual light output between 4300K an 6000K isnt that much different. To be honest I think it could be the way the camera took the light. Although next time I will be going for 4300K over the 6000K.
Actually there is about 30% difference in 'factual' light output between 4.3k and 6k bulbs.

You can order replacement/different temp bulbs off the same ebay sellers normally... no need to change the whole lot so if you don't like the ones you go for you can swap 'em easily.

Brianmoooore... i dont even know what you mean when you say '45/40W tungsten headlamp bulbs'. How on earth would i remember? P.s. i have pretty yellowy bulbs, thats all i know about headlamps. I dont have much of an interest in knowing different types of lights, how they're wired and what not..... i dont even know what H1 means but all as i know now is thats the type of bulb fittement you need on an E30.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone installed 3000K lights in they're fogs?
If so how's it look, how do you like them??

Thanks

10k and 12k are far less bright than 4.5k or 6k, and will probably get you pulled for showing a blue light.

what brian said.

the k - rating is the colour , not the actual temperature or light output. a set in the 4000k range will give the cleanest light that appears brightest to the human eye, so for actually seeing where you're going it's the best to go for. 6000k has a slight blue tinge, without killing the visible light output too much, so is the one people go for if the wan more of an 'hid' look allong with improved lighting.

any higher than 6000 and they start getting very obviously blue, the 12000 must be almost purple, you'll start attracting unwanted attention, annoy other road users and have lights that don't work any better than the standard ones!
cheers,

harry

Does anyone know if the phaseII headlights like the ones below work fine with hid?

Image

i´m asking this because i found that there´s some headlights designs for halogen bulbs that originate glare when converted to hid.

watch this please: illegal hid conversion kits explained-

What do you guys (and girls) think about this?

The outer headlamps in your pic have a metal shield which provides the beam control and cut off, and will work absolutely fine with HID lamps. These are the ones that you must use.
