Thanks again guys, I will get pics and videos as soon as I can, I want to hear what it sounds like!
I'm using Toby's exhaust as well, with a single small silencer :)

With the little spare time I had today I held my breath and got cutting into my new wiring loom.
I checked the wires first and they were all the same colours, so I assumed they were for the same things as my old one.

Image

With it connected up (the blocks will be replaced with soldered joints when I know it all works ok) the engine turns over and the warning lights on the dashboard all come on, so it looks promising.

Now I've got to sort out getting my ecu back and take it from there. :D

Progress was slow because I messed up the wiring!

Ant is currently doing a marvelous job sorting it out, and being very patient with all my stupid questions! :D

It shouldn't be too long before it's running properly. 8)

Just a quick update.

I moved the air inlet temperature sensor nearer to the throttle body (as I had put it in a cold air flow area so it would have given false readings), using part of a Nissan 200sx steel intercooler pipe with a nut welded on as a boss for the sensor, Saab 9000 chopped down intercooler hoses and a Ford electrical plug! :)

Image

Fitted and wire connections soldered and wrapped, and for the throttle position sensor.

Image

The main wiring holder cover cut to fit and fitted along with K&N breather filter on camshaft cover.
Wiring for the bonnet pin switch on the alarm and for electric fan extended and re-routed along the top of the wing, as it melted when it was down low on the inner wing!

As the engine bay is now, with cheap and nasty strut brace fitted. :?

Image

I also fitted a 10k resistor in the crank position sensor wire in the ecu (just below where the two yellow wires run next to each other).
I don't really understand why, I did it because Ant told me too!
But without the resistor the engine wouldn't go past 2000rpm.

I'll wait for Ant to get round again before I test this, just in case I've done a bad thing! :)

Image

Tomorrow I'll fit and plug in the ecu under the dashboard and maybe start work on replacing the second rear brake backplate (the handbrake shoe pins have pulled through) ready for the M.O.T.

It's almost ready to roll! winkeye

i find it very strange looking at an e30 m30's engine bay and then looking at this turbo set up. it seems like a big confusion of extra wires and pipes and ........ confusion.

tricky little bugger. good luck man it seems like you getting close. :D i would love to see this beasty in action

Thanks Ric, it does look a little confusing, but I think mostly because it's not very neat! :o:
It's all quite logical if you look at where everything goes to.

Anyway, time for an update.

Here is the intercooler being dummy fitted;

Image

And all back together, nice and subtle, you can just see the intercooler behind the bottom of the IS lip.

Image

I'm in the process of fitting these Audi guages;

M3 propshaft and 2.93:1 l.s.d. awaiting fitment;

But the main thing is....

.... it's running!!! :D

I got the car towed to Ant who mapped it for me, although I couldn't afford the rolling road set up just yet but it's mobile again and passed the M.O.T.

I've not really had a dry day to try it out to it's full extent but it's certainly a right handfull on cold, damp roads.
I've experienced wheelspin in fourth gear as the boost comes in at errrrm... quite a lot of miles per hour! winkeye
Keeps your attention sharp that does!

Fuel consumption is a bit 8O though!

There are a few little issues to sort out, including repairing my exhaust which I smashed on our horrid driveway, got to mig that back together tomorrow.

I've also had a sunroof catastrophe where a mounting screw for the motor fell out and the whole things shut all wonky, I had to duct tape it up on one side for now. :?
My boot is full of water so I've ordered a new boot seal (I did the tail light gaskets a while ago too), and my black five-spokes turned out to be shaped like 50 pence coins.

Today, after buying shorter wheel bolts as these wheels are thinner around the bolt holes, and grinding down the raised outer parts of my E32 / E34 calipers to clear the inside of the spokes and having a set of Bridgestone RE040 tyres I had stashed away from my old Nissan 200sx fitted, I got these Lenso RS5s on.
They are noticably lighter in weight than my buckled five-spokes too! :)

Image

Image

The tyres are 205/45 x 17, as oppsed to my previous 205/40 x 17, and I can say that the ride has improved, although there is a little more scrubbing on the wheel arch liners on full lock now, can't have it all!

Still plenty of work to do and a few plans to improve things, but I've already been baiting Imprezas, Porsche 911s, big Mercs, Jags and other expensive machinery.

So what sort of power would it be running now? and sorry if ive missed it but what boost are you running?

Thanks dude! :)

It's along way from being mint, trust me, it's a bit of a turd when you look closely! :?

I think the spring in the wastegate is 9psi, not 100% sure though as the boost guage I bought didn't work so I've got to fix mine or get another one.

I would guess it's running somewhere around 300bhp, but it's not been on a rolling road yet so that is purely a guess, it certainly feels strong and the torque when it comes on boost around 3000rpm feels like the whole engine is swelling up and breathing deeply! :D

The best thing in my opinion is the way it gathers pace in the higher gears, the acceleration hardly slows down even well into fourth gear.

I doff my cap to Toby Unna who built this system originally, and the credit must go to him, I just bolted it to my car.

Well, mine looks alright from about 200 miles away thru binoculars, anywhere closer and its a shed :( its depressing!

Last turbo experience I had was my chipped saab turbo running 1.4bar of boost, was a laugh but off-boost it was shit! i suppose this must be alot better as youve got the low down of the 3.5 and then the kick in the face of the turbo :D must be one helluva fun car to drive :D

Thanks 336tdse, and likewise, I love what you are doing too! 8)

FreddieS, Saab Turbo and 1.4 bar sounds good to me! :)

The low down grunt of the M30 is good, covers up lag quite alot, but when it does come on boost with the right hand pedal on the floor you have to be ready - to make sure it goes in straight line!

It is fun but it's also a lesson in self restraint, if you gave it plenty of throttle everywhere it would be very socially and morally irresponsible, and dangerous.
So in a way it's kind of frustrating, all that power but not all that much opportunity to use it all on the road.

I'm glad I didn't have this car when I was 19 years old, I probably would be dead by now if I had! :D

225bhp/lbft 3.5 here, it is a handful in the wet in any gear, and anything 3rd or below in the dry takes some caution. 300bhp would be stonking :D

Thanks for the amusing and encouraging comments guys!

MJG - I have plans for a mate to come out with me with a camcorder, but will probably after Xmas now.
It is fairly useless in the wet, but it's fun when you want to be a hooligan and go everywhere sideways! winkeye

Oakey - the only thing that is different in my set up from Toby's is the bigger injectors that I fitted.
Toby's were just about at their limit so I guessed I'd fit bigger ones now, allowing for potential upgrade in boost later.

Flozman - Thanks, but I hate to say it, you do simply have to be a bit sensible and careful with it and choose moments of madness wisely.
Braking distances can catch you out all the more when your giving something like this some welly, it does command respect. And it's only fair to other road users, not to mention my driving license! :?

Turbo's are cool

Everyday I drive mine I find away for it too amuse me, this morning\s victim was a cock in a type r, he dropped a cog in front of me and went for it, being the playful animal I am I just cruized behind him, matching his speed, once upto 1?? he hugged the inside on a bend and I saw my chance, planted it and took him on the outside! nearly hit limiter in 5th! It's just such a good crack, power above 5k is insane, wheel spin in 4th in the dry anyone?

I never went in Toby's car but he told me some stories when I was there last, I'm sure it's an animal!

Have you sorted a uprated clutch?

Bigger inj is a must, they were maxxed @ 7psi.

What turbo? The one Toby had is a time bomb, xspower isn't known for quality.

Also when you do upgrade the turbo you must fit a bigger downpipe, 3.5 inches on a Holset HX50 woule be ideal!!

It is a bit of a beast, but I'm getting used to it a bit now and I'm wondering about just a little more boost... winkeye
Probably a very bad idea on my old engine though!

I've also read some shocking stories of XSPower turbos, but cash is very limited at the moment so I'll just have to treat it well and see how it goes.
Would be nice to upgrade but it's not an option.

The clutch is a fairly new standard E28 M30 Borg & Beck unit, hasn't slipped at all yet.

And yes, turbos are very coool! 8)

The clutches hold up if you're kind and don't 4k launch it off the line! Also hard 2nd gear snatch can do it too, 3rd and above at speed is fine, plant away!!!

I know a man who lives in a field full of tractors, lorries and holset turbo's, if you want one cheap i can have a word, being in the trade gets him special discounts, then 4 inch downpipe and 30psi! :D

Right, well due to a chat I was having on another thread, I thought I'd do another update.

I had a few months of bad luck to start with.

Firstly, I had throttle position sensor failure.

Then fuel pump failure.

Then crankshaft position sensor failure.

Then after re-wiring a few bits I drove it up the road but had neglected to tie back wiring to the ignition coil, which slipped down the inner wing and melted on the exhaust.
It turned out it had shorted something in the o.b.c. immobiliser or something, so it was bypassed.

But for the last four months or so it's generally been running well. :)

Got the Audi guages fitted...

Image

Rear axle - camber and toe adjustment plates and eccentric bolts fitted...

Image

... along with a non-leaking fuel tank, and the diff was changed from 3.73:1 to a 2.93:1.

I even tidied up the engine bay a little (still more work to do here though).

Image

It's also been on track, at last...

Image

Image

.... and off track!!! :o:

Image

Image

I suffered massive brake fade (crap front pads) at Brands Hatch, got carried away, didn't slow down enough for Paddock Hill bend.

Apart from that I was surprised how well the car behaved, slow in and fast out of corners eliminated understeer and there were many times when the back end was stepping out well into third gear, so I was quite happy with that, although I will experiment with some of the settings.

Also, through another forum meet, I was put into contact with a photographer from Total BMW magazine.

To cut a very long story short it's in the October issue which comes out this friday! :)

So I guess rust, dents and general turdishness isn't a problem for them! :D

And this weekend I intend to run it up the strip at Santa Pod. :)

See you there.... 8)

Martin.

Jon, without the turbo, two years ago, my best run was 14.9 @ 98.5mph, and they were all close to that.
That was launching in second with a 3.73:1 diff ratio.

This time I'm hoping to get into the 13s at around 110mph, I'd be happy with that for now.
I'll be launching in first though as the 2.93:1 diff makes second gear a bit too long to launch hard in.

Does anyone actually wear a crash helmet for 100+mph passes like they say you should..?
