Nice work, looking good! Can't the oil filter housing be turned 180 degrees to avoid the need to remove the front manifold each time you do an oil change?

Thanks James for taking the time to post that.
You happy with the drive ie. the sound, performance etc (if any different)?
I wonder if that problem with the oil filter is a common one with tubulars.

Hi Guys,
Speedtouch,
That unfortunately (unless I am mistaken) is the natural orientation and location position of the oil filter with the standard BMW sandwich plate on - if it is rotated the solid pipes will no longer run correctly to the cooler.
Gooner1,
Oil filter removal should only be a problem with the oil cooler option fitted. However, it is not a major job to unbolt the front 3 branches to get the filter on. You don't need to fully remove it you just need to pull the branches off the studs so there is enough clearance - you "might" even get away doing this without undoing the U bolt underneath.
John325tewerin,
No problem at all, anything to help. The drive is good with it on. Admittedly I have only done a down the road and back run, as I did not have time and the 327i is not my daily driver (it's too pampered!) so with more miles I will give more feedback. I am also still awaiting the bung from e-bay so I borrowed the lambda off my 320i, which I don't want to ruin hence reduced test run (nothing to connect the terminals too, apart form wrap them around the gearbox mount).
The engine note is noticeably higher actually, from the engine end. You still get the nice deep roar from the exhaust-that has not changed, but the burble from the 325i manifold and any engine noise transmitted from the head is replaced with a higher clean note around the manifold. It is different, but I like it.
I will let you know on performance. I wish I had the money to roller it before and after, but unfortunately I don't - it would have been interesting. I will let you know if there are any improvements in driveability though.

James I've got one of these on my race car now and I haven't needed to remove the manifold. It's fiddly and messy but it will come out. I was going to put in a remote filter head but for the time being Ive just wrapped it in heatwrap. I change my oil and filter every race so If it doesn't get on my tits, it won't bother you every 6000 miles or so
Definitely feels better than my old exhaust but I've had this mated to a one off single exhaust system so it's lighter too and this also makes a big difference.
Go out and thrash the spuds off it if you haven't already. It goes a lovely purple colour!! Sad I know but I like that kind of thing

Mine is in the process of being ceramic coated. I'm also sourcing a hi-flow dual inlet cat. I'll let you guys know how it all goes. I do know of one set (but of our Australian group buy) that is being run on a supercharged E30. The buyer seems very pleased.
I will also try to do a dyno before and after.
Nice write up, James.

Cheers Guys,
Not too worried about the oil filter thing - like you say it will only be every 6k, and all the stuff on the head is new as the engine has only done 1500 miles since a full rebuild, I replaced the oil filter last weekend at the same time - so I should be safe for the next 6000 miles
. I suspect (putting my Engineer hat on
-sorry!) it will be a case of part to part variation with the exhaust manifold....as mine is literally 2-3mm in the way of preventing the oil filter from going on....
AlpineAde - please post some pics, would love to see it, and youshorty73!! Is yours in the Kumho race series?

Check my Avatar and sig mate! Definitely not a Kumho sticker
I'll get some photos when I remember to take my camera with me next time I'm on the car.
I've got an assortment of different oil filters down with the car (BMW,Purolator, etc). Can't remember of the top of my head but when I stood 3 of them together one came up a touch shorter. Might have been the purolator one. I'll check for you as it might save some grief.
It wouldn't be too much trouble to put in a remote head if you've got room?

Sorry Shorty,
I was thinking about the spec, and that PBMW can't run modified manifolds so I thought you were in what used to be the "Kumho Challenge".
Just checked out the links though, and very impressive.
Would be interested to hear on the oil filter sandwich plate, although I am not too fussed on dropping the front part of the manifold off for servicing.
My PBMW car has its standard manifold on so I won't have that fit problem on that, as like you I will probably be changing the oil after every race or every couple - when I finally get the thing finished!!!
I'll have to start posting some pics of my build up...

Apparently yes.john325tewerin wrote:What the hell! For £200 I'll give it a go, as long as the problems have been rectified now.hottuning_eu wrote:Good morning all!,
Maybe it is time to start a new groupbuy for the manifold!
We can start todat with that. And let´s see if we can get a number of 10 people again.
We can do it the same at the first group buy 200£ posted to the UK.
Best regards,
Louise

sorry to post again, so the problem with connecting and fitting to head is sorted? also is it better to have this cross over pipe or have two single pipes made up? i just see this cross over pipe as a restriction disturbence of gass flow??!!

I'm very interested, but can't commit right now for 2 reasons:
1) I'm skint until payday!
2) I've got a spare M50 engine sat in the garage that I keep threatening to chuck in instead of the M20, so it would be a bit of a waste.
I assume that the M20 manifold can't be used on an M50 engine?
I've subscribed to this thread, so will confirm / retract interest as and when the list gets close to 10 people...
Cheers
Dave
