Well not quite but that is what my speedo was indicating!! Think I must have a problem with it as the past few days my speedo has intermittently been playing up. Driving a long at normal motorway speed it suddenly spins round to max (150mph) where it will either sit for a couple of secs or in the case of yesterday for quite a few minutes before settling back to the correct speed (this is matched by the economy meter show 0mpg - understandable as it only just manages 30mpg at 70mph).
Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this (I suspect either a dodgy speedo or speedo cable but I aint no mechanic)?

I think you're just under estimating the sheer powaaaahh of the 316i...
Probably is the speedo cables as fuzzy said, replace as much as you can and give the socket in the back of the diff a good clean. Common trouble spot, both my E30s have had this at some point. Indicated 145mph pulling into my girlfriends drive in my old iS

i'v seen 140mph on the dial so (135mph actual) and was supprised how quick it got up there
