You need to change the sump for an e30 m42 one and also the inlet manifold as well. Trying to think, if your m40 sump would fit, anyone else know?

I have a feeling the bottom part is the same, but the top part slightly different?

you will need the e30 sump and alloy engine mounts . think you will need to change the inlet and exhaust manifolds and maybe some other bits too . but i think people have done it before

RealOEM suggests that both parts of the sump are the same on M40 and M42, they certainly look the same too :D

I'm not sure if the mounts need changing either or whether the M40 ones will fit? I know the M40 mounts are dampered and the M42 ones aren't but that's only where they mount to the chassis.

thanks for your advice folks, fingers crossed changing the m44 sump for my m40 sump should do the trick.Just got a couple of questions, sorry if i sound daft but i aint a mechanic,so bare with me.was wondering why i had to swap the air intake manifold for the m42 intake. All so, anyway i can get get away with the m44 exhaust manifold?custom down pipe?cant find any e30 m42 exhaust manifolds locally, would a m42 exhaust manifold from a e36 work?,no probs getting one of those.Just one last thing, oil pick up in wrong place, how do i get round that prob?thanks for taking the time to help me out.

I don't see how the exhaust manifold would be a problem, as long as it clears the cross member and steering coupling. Not sure about the intake manifold though? It might be to do with a space issue or throttle linkage problems maybe? (not much help there I'm afraid :? )
