M20 (F/G/H plate) - pain in the arse. Viscous fan, distributor cap and rotor arm, top cambelt cover, slacken and move alternator and power steering pump inwards, cambelt tensioner and spring. By the time you have gone this far you would be daft not to go the whole way and fit a new cambelt and tensioner - just another six 13mm bolts for the crank pulley and the lower belt cover. You CAN change the pump without disturbing the belt, but it is such an appalling bastard of a job to get the tensioner spring back in that it's often quicker to do the whole thing.

M50 (H/J/K/L/M/N plate). Draw a diagram of the belt run round the pulleys, remove the viscous fan, slacken the four 10mm water pump pulley bolts, move the adjuster down with an allen key and slip the belt off, four 10mm nuts and off comes the pump. Start to finish in an hour if you've not done one before.

On E34's taking the radiator out makes life a lot easier. Filling and bleeding the system is easy if you do it right. Refit the rad, connect the bottom hose. Fit the top hose to the engine only. Slowly fill the engine with coolant until you see it at the base of the hose. Now remove the hose and fit it to the rad, pointing upwards. Now fill the radiator with coolant until you see it at the base of the hose. Now refit the hose completely, top up the header tank, fire it up and go for a brisk drive with the heater set to hot. As soon as the heater pumps hot air out, it's bled. Top up the header tank if needed, job done.

You'd never guess I just changed an E34 rad 10-15 mins ago, would you? :D
