Sorry guys this isn't E30 related but in my visits here I've noticed how busy the engine swap forum is and the M5x engine is a popular upgrade, so I'd very much appreciate your help please!

I'm currently converting my 1999 316i compact with a 2.8 from a 1996 328i saloon. But there are some differences in the x20 connectors....

I have marked those that appear to be a match with a *.

316i compact x20 (car side)-----------------------------328i x20 (engine side)

Pin no. Colour Function -------------------------------- Colour Function
1 YEL - ABS/ASC control unit -------------------------- not used
2 BRN - ABS/ASC control unit -------------------------- not used
3 BLK/GRN - Exhaust gas valve/temp ? ------------- GRY/VIO ?
*4 BLK/BLU - AC compressor relay ------------------- BLK/BLU Air con
5 not used ------------------------------------------------ BLK/GRY Aux. fan/diagnostic ?
6 not used ------------------------------------------------ VIO/GRY ?
*7 GRN - Immobiliser device --------------------------- GRN ?
8 BLK/WHT - Fuse/DME relay -------------------------- RED/WHT ABS ?
9 WHT/GRN - ABS/ASC control unit ------------------- BRN/RED ?
10 BLU/YEL - Reverse light switch ? ------------------ BLU/YEL Static oil level ? (colour matches...)
11not used ----------------------------------------------- BRN/YEL Water temp
12 not used ---------------------------------------------- BRN/VIO Water temp
*13 GRN/VIO - Fuel pump relay ---------------------- GRN/VIO Fuel pump
14 WHT/VIO/YEL - Fuse/OBD con. ? ------------------ not used
*15 BLK/GRN - Unloader relay ? ---------------------- BLK/GRN Unloader relay
*16 WHT/YEL - Diagnostic/DME ----------------------- WHT/YEL Rx data/diagnostic
*17 WHT/VIO - Diagnostic connector ---------------- WHT/VIO Tx data/diagnostic
*18 BLK/YEL - Starter ----------------------------------- BLK/YEL Starter
*19 WHT/GRN - Diagnostic/instrument cluster ------ WHT/GRN Service reser/diagnostic
*20 BLK - Various control units ------------------------ BLK Various control units
*21 GRN - DME/ignition switch ------------------------- GRN Igition
*22 GRN/WHT - Fuse/various control units --------- GRN/WHT Fuse F26/ various sensors etc.
*23 BRN/GRN - ? ----------------------------------------- BRN/GRN Oil pressure
24 GRN/YEL - OBC --------------------------------------- WHT/BLK Fuel rate/MPG (a match?)
*25 BLU Instrument cluster ---------------------------- BLU ignition warning

The colours were read from the connectors themselves, it's just some of the functions I'm not sure of.

Could people PLEASE fill in the blanks or correct any mistakes.

Also are they all necessary - sounds daft, but for example would the '96 328i saloon of had ASC like my current car...?

Many thanks :)

Where have you got those pin No's and colours from? Have you physically opened the plugs and looked as they dont look right to me?

3 is ABS supply
8 is for the fault light
24 is fuel rate

Cant think of any others

@fowler - I was in touch with Ant before taking on the conversion, he said to email him but he hasn't replied :( I think I may need his help unless I manage to go it alone...

@DanThe - The pin no's and colours are all correct and yes, I opened the plugs.

I've just been and double-checked them. I think pin 8 on the car is actually BLK/GRY, not BLK/WHT. Other than that they're right.
