I'm currently putting together a BMW M20 525i engine from an E34 5 (sorry)
I've got a problem.

Next to the oil pump, underneath in the block casting, there is a threaded hole. it goes directly into the oil gallery. I never took the engine apart and i'm assuming their should be something screwed into it, as i'd immagine their would be no oil pressure with it left open. So can tput the sump on until I find out what if anything should be there!
Short of ringing BMW and getting a schematic drawing sent through Fax.

See red circled part in pic:

Thanks.

Only thing I can think of is the oil pressure relief valve. You sure this is an M20? Thought 525's got the larger M30..

Most likely, a pipe with an oil strainer reaching down into the sump to feed the oil pump.

There's supposed to be a great big alloy bolt in there which has a plunger and a spring inside it.

It's the pressure releif valve and you're right, there would be no oil pressure without it!

you already have a lovely bunch of coconuts :D

However, you were incorrect re the 525i having an m30- thats only on the e28, as opposed to the e34 that this lump is out of

cheers guys, It is indeed a pressure relief valve.

the guy that gave me the engine and parts forgot to give me the valve so just waiting on it.

Was a strange one as the oil pump already has a pressure relief valve and pickup!

thanks for the help/suggestions :D
