This has been staring me in the face for so long and I've never thought of it til now. I'm sick of the way my brilliant pink iS keeps miss behaving, horrible rust and dodgy electrics, poverty spec to say the least. My 318i touring is sitting outside my mums garage doing nothing in my vein attempt to sell bits off it so I can shift it. The shell is fairly good, a lot better than my iS, and the electrics actually all work. Only downside is a slight dent on the nearside wing, a little badger damag on the front valance and a shitty interior.

The questuion is this. Should I swap the engine and box from the iShed into the touring? Will the M40 rear exhaust section work with the M42 as mines buggered? Can I swap my Mtech suspension from the iS into my touring? Is there anything I might overlook when doing this conversion? Problems etc.

As far as I can tell it should be a fairly easy swap, doable in a weekend. I can then sell my very good interior from the iS as well as any other bits surplus to requirements and scrap the rusty tired shell, then concentrate on prettying the inside of the touring out etc.

Suggestions or any other form of help would be grand :D

Agreed do it if the iS is a nail and the touring is tidy!
Easy weekends work and more or less straight swap.
Coil pack bracket will need drilling off the iS shell and spot welding back onto the touring.
touring will already have Mtec spec suspension so just upgrade the springs if need be.
doub the M40 exhaust will fit, infact pretty certain it wont.

Good luck :D

If you don't do it I'm looking for a complete M42 installation for my Touring. With the money from that and the interior, and the sale of your Touring bits you'll have enough to buy the 325 you really want.

PM me details if you're keen to sell.

cheers

325 is out of the question atm as I'd get killed on insurance (only a youngen see!)

Gareth you must have seen my iS parked behind your car on Sunday, it's a shed, and I'm really not happy with it at the moment. Combining the good engine from my iS and the good shell seems like a no brainer, I've chewed it over and I'm going to go for it, probably over the bank holiday.

Forgot about the coil bracket Eko, I might see if it'll be worth my while doing a coil on plug conversion while I'm there. I had my doubts about the exhaust too. It's about time I pulled my finger out and got it sorted anyway :D

I wouldn't bother fella.

It will be classed as a modified car if you change it, then you are in for a whole lot of heartache at your age. :(

I didn't have a look over yours as I was too busy chatting shit all day, but can you not tidy some of the more nasty bits and chuck it on ebay and get a good solid one?

Cannot see too many problems with insurance, afterall, you are swapping an 1.8 engine for another 1.8 engine... winkeye

I'm going to contact my insurance company regarding the swap to see where they stand, but might wait til mid September as that's when my first years no claims comes through (touch wood).

Dunno why you would tell the insurance company mate, i know their are alot of sensible souls around but to be honest i wouldnt bother. Its not like your swaping it for a M20 which is oviously different.

By the way how old are you? I only ask because im 26 and you looked older than me

I think many insurance companies will just treat it as an IS, so just keep hunting you'll find one.

And I wont stick too close to ABS equipped cars in the wet from now on 8O proper sketchy moment.
