Last nght I found myself driving behind an oldish D plate, de badged (except a M boot badge) very boxy looking BMW. It was in good nick, 4 door, private plate, twin pipe bang in the centre of a rear skirt. Obiously I was interested and he was eyeing me up in his door mirror. I have a 325i Motorsport Cab, he would be looking at tinted headlights, colour coded centre grill & side grill with integrated M colours. The inevitable happened..traffic lights came up with two lanes available, he chose the inside lane. It was my call, stay behind him or pull up alongside. Yep you know me ..... I like a set to now & then.
Last week I was getting it on with an 840 on the A46, side by side at 125mph, I think he was toying with me to be honest. But it was all friendly stuff, thats how it should be.
But back to Mr Old, strange looking beema. When I glanced across for eye contact there wasnt any! serious stuff now. The lights changed and we were off or I should say he was off !! I red lined it in 2nd & 3rd but never got to a cars length near him more like 3 car lengths behind, he p*ss** all over me. :surrender: When the two lanes became one he slowed down to a dawdle as if it had never happened. We came to roundabout where he went left and me right, I looked at him but again nothing. The car had nice wheels, full body kit but I dont know what model it was!
I've bin going through all my old mags looking for it but I'm snookered after about 2 hrs now. The closest I have come is an E28 5 series, a 535i, but it looked boxier than that to me last night. Any one got any suggestions as to its identity?

What ever it was I'll be more cautious with an old banger next time !!

:drive:

It might not have had the standard unit under the bonnet, there are some sleepers on this very forum, no reason not to do it to an old 5 series (which is what it sounds like)

did it look slightly like this?

Image

if so its an e28 535i...prob an m535i with 210ish bhp and i have jheard that these are a fair bit quicker than an e30 325..... it probably would pull away.... may have even been an e28 M5 in which case it would have pi55ed all over u like u said....

i have a fairly quick 30 and could not really shake off an e28 535 by much til 140....... so they are quick!!!

Karan is right,

e28 535i is noticeably faster than an e30 325i......infact its faster than an Alpina C2 2.5.

I think they may even have 218bhp as standard.

I well fancy an E28!.........M5!

Dont forget I only saw the rear and one side of the car. Thats why I'm struggling to identify it, however if it was a M5 wouldnt the boot badge have said that? Not just the M logo on its own. But i do think it was a 535i and hell it was rapid !!

yep. sounds like an e28 535i. centre exhaust etc.

this will piss on a 325. well quick. a cheap one with an lsd makes a nice tool.

e28 m5"s are great. but i think there a bit too rare to go pissing around in.

e28 m5 is an awesome car.. only 187 ever in the UK...

m535i uses stock m30 engine, m5 had basically an m1 engine with throttle bodies 24 valve etc... i think its like an e30 m3 engine with 2 more cylinders basically

yep

m535 is just same m30 that was in the 635csi

the m5 was an early s38 lump, which was 24v and breathed upon by the m-werks. as karan said throttle boddies and a twin cam design gave not far from another 100bhp

i actually saw a very good condition m5 when on holiday a few weeks ago.............oh to live in a rust free country.

The more I think about it & hear from you guys I'm thinking this was some car. I noticed in Nostrils pics that he said the 535i had no badges at all and the M535i had just an M badge, but no M5... I've always admired the way top motors understate what they actually are.
I feel lucky to have seen such a fine example of BMW technology.

m535i's are top cars. They are so rare now and a clean one really turns heads.

They are very tuneable aswell, easy 240-250 bhp with a cam and possible MAf conversion.

The manifolds were quite restrictive on them aswell and they can be heavily improved upon.

Great thing is the M30 lump is so reliable and so torquey.

I am serioulsy considering one myself. They just looks so so cool now, especially with 17" BBS spilt rims!
