Should be R12 (the old banned stuff) unless it's had a conversion in the past, usual way to tell is the charge ports on the metal pipes. If the ports have small metal caps then it should still be the old R12, if it has 2 different sized ports (one blue and one red) the it'll be on the new R134a.
It's illegal here in europe for any garage or air con specialist to recharge any vehicle used on the road with R12. If you do have R12 you'll need to convert it to R134a, the kit is available from BMW for about £90.

Political Correctness - A concept based on the idea that its possible to pick up a turd by the clean end !
If the system is still in good working order, you dont have to convert over to R134a, there are replacement gases one of which is RS24 (I think). I had mine refilled with this by a guy who knew about E30 aircon systems and it works fine now.
