BIKE ENGINED E30

right guys im doing engineering and i think im fairly confindent it what im doing and have access to plenty tools im getting a 316 as my first car but i have a spare garage and want to make a bike engined e30 has anyone seen or know of anyone whos done this and what were the results
one last question it what is the weight of an engineless e30 cheers tom

Dont know of any been done, I would suspect they err on the heavy side for a bike engine. Would estimate about 1000-1050 for an engineless E30, probably get it down to 900 by removing everything you dont need?

Given the 325i book weight is 1250kg and M20 engine 117Kg approx, that makes 1133kg
IMO withough some serious weight loss a bike engine E30 isn't gonna move much better than a 325.

I've got to agree withe the other, guys the e30 shell is too heavy to benifit from the bike engines peaky power delivery.

Err the chassis, the engine is a big heavy lump but as has been said, without that it's still the wrong side of a ton
For a completly deranged/deviant, chav baiting, bike powered nutterwagon...... MK1 micra, rear wheel drive, the grass track versions that are fully stripped can get down to about 550Kg and can be made to handle well.... imagine the spotty chavs face when his 'well fast innet' saxo vtr gets anhialated by a micra

right.... looked into it a bit further and i was gonna cage it and everything so it would be far to heavy for a bike engine sooooo.. basically i was looking for a really revvy but reliable car starting from a 318 or 316 my theory now is to get her on bike carbs (suggestions please) and getting a really light flywheel

my old stripped E30 sport weighed 1050 kg so a bike engine would be rather pointless but sound great
i would say you need a target weight of 500kg to make it worthwhile,

From what I've seen most bike engines are dopped into minis or smart cars.
Bike engines dont have that much torque thats why there only good only a really light chasis.
If you want something revvy which you could put into an e30, why not try the engine from a type r for example

if you could fit 2 bike engines side by side under the bonnet running a wheel each both tuned , maybe r1 , hyabusa engines together i think that would be more like it , that way if it was stripped out, each engine would only be pushing 525kg each!! now that would f*****in rip!!

Much is made of the 'peaky delivery' of a bike engine, it's nonsense... you have a 6spd sequental box so if you want more power you just shift down, it takes a fraction of a second. My BEC pulls like a train from 2nd to 5th (it lights the tyres if you push it in first and 6th is merely quick rather than bonkers) and it'll pull cleanly from 2500 to 17500 rpm even under load.
E30 is however heavy for a mere 150bhp engine. To make a quick BE_E30 you'd need to be looking at one of the big 1200 or 1300cc motors (180bhp but much more money than R1). To make a fast one you'll be wanting one in the front one in the back or something like a turbo 'Busa which is capable of 500+bhp if your wallet can keep up.
Clutches need attention, they will melt (mine has lasted a thousand or so miles but post dragstrip session is now slipping) but there's loads of aftermarket bits. Gearboxes are weak especially if you ditch all the impact absorbing drivetrain (so don't!). Gearbox will take even more of a beating in a big saloon than a lightweight 7 as you'll be hammering it to keep the engine on cam. Exhaust wont fit unless you're lucky. Oil system needs attention.
Having built a BEC (and I'm in the process of building another one, a mini this time for a mate) I personally wouldn't do it unless I was going the whole hog, twin 'Busa or '12R, 4WD into a gutted shell.
If you just want a fast E30 then go with a more conventional swap, big capacity or forced induction.
There's a MK2 Escort rallycar with a bike mill on youtube. It's far from slow but I bet it's hard work to drive.

I'd quite like to supercharge a Hyabusa lump and try it in an E30... Massive rootes type blower with lower comp forged pistons.

I had a 205 GTi 1.9 and gutted it for a bit of a laugh. Seem to recall that only got down to about 750ish (can't remember exactly, old age is setting in).
