Sorry if Ive missed sumtin but I was just wondering is Glenn a mechanic or did he teach himself. Pure genius, if hes the second it gives people like me sum faith to try sumtin half as what hes doin.

That's correct to a point. It does not go looking for sensors, but it does need to see the instrument cluster (kombi).

When I did my conversion, I initially thought I had an EWS alignment problem. I took it to my dealer (who were more than happy to help), and they plugged thier computer into the diagnostic socket to re-align things. During the coding routine, the computer looked for the E36 instrument cluster, but when it could not find it, it chucked them out of the coding routine. They said the only way they could code it, was if I had the E36 cluster wired into the car.

My problem turned out to be a faulty loop aerial for the ignition key, so it was an easy fix. I have since got an E36 cluster and made a connection under the bonnet to allow me to plug it in should it be needed in the future. It's simple enough to hook up, as you only need power & GND, as well as the Rx & Tx data lines.

no mechanic robbie, you just pick it up after a lifetime of f**king around with cars, bikes etc, we all have to start somewhere.

ian, it was the way he dealt with me after i told him about the engine swap, like i shouldn't be doing things like that with bmw's.
i think he pictured me as 'dr emmit.l.brown off back to the future'

took the ecu to 'chipped uk', he said the ecu is fine, so i'll have to dig deeper this weekend to see why it wont start. he also said the ecu has had the speed limiter removed, sometime in the past :twisted: :twisted:

I may have to trouble you for some info about this soon Ian. Just waiting on the exhaust manifold (still :roll: ) and then it will be time to try starting the S50.

Im guessing the EWS will need aligning as its been disconnected from power for so long. I have the E36 M3 clocks that came with the engine, so if it can be done in the E30 that would be much easier.

I'll sort you out with any info you need :thumb:

I don't think the EWS will loose it's alignment just because it's been disconnected for a while. Mine was unplugged for over a year, and was still okay. It's all held in non volatile memory, so doesn't need power.

As long as your ECU, EWS & keys came from the same car, you should be okay.

:woohoo: Thats good to hear. All the bits came from the same car and has been unpluged for coming up to a year now so hopefully it will be ok.

yes james,
dont worry about how long its been out of the car with no power,
mine was out of the car for well over a year.
fab's even lost my original key,so had to get me another one.
then when i connected it all up she fired up instantly

32valve bmw v8..............hah!!!!

it'll have to try harder than that to beat me!

got it sorted, running this afternoon.
i had fuel pressure and i had power up at the coil packs, and it was turning over like a good-un, so i thought it can't be getting a signal when to fire.
so called in for a crank sensor and hey-presto she fired up straight away,
only one problem, can't wipe this smile off my face!
am just glad not to have f**ked the ecu up.

Glenn: did you have to relocate the brake intensifyer (or how it's called :squint: ) to position the new engine rite? in the link that karan gave me they have relocated that device :screwy:

4.4 came with vanos(es)? Rite? I gotta get one without vanos because those with vanos cannot be run with aftermarket ecu's

september 99 build onwards were vanos units dude

the revised engines were rolled out with the 200o model year facelifts on e38 and 39 ranges

you want some pix of the unit to avoid ? I have 2 @ work in bits @ the mo mate, one thats cooked to death overheated and lost all its bore plating, and a replacement unit thats just bare block and heads

You can get aftermarket ECUs to control VANOS, but they're quite expensive. I've got an OMEX ECU that can do VANOS.

The other alternative is to find some way of locking the cams in a desirable posision.

You see people with adjustable vernier pulleys on cams and this is what they're doing, adjusting the lift on overlap. Obviously VANOS can do this whenever it likes, but the principal's the same :)

Is there more than one way possible? I talked to Tino (the owner of e30.de site.. or the creator) and he said that it's the only way.
p.s. found out that the gearbox from m60 3.0 (5spd manual) also fits, i hope it's cheaper..
