Looking on the bay...

K and N panel filter for the proper BMW box.... £42
Pipercross... £32

jonny no make....£8 (think Halfrauds is about the same)

My question is....under normal conditions would you notice the difference? I understand that on a dyno you might but under normal driving?

Maybe im just mean...

My answer to your question is frankly, no! The only thing you will notice is the placebo who tell your brain that your car is running better! But a good thing with K&N is that they have life time warranty and good if you have a car with a turbo!

I know K and N make good kit and offer the warranty, however they do same to be a cliche, no self respecting pikey would have a motor without a k and n induction kit. Innit.

Presume the £8 item is a paper replace every inspection. K@N is cleanable and re-usable,the blurb with mine claimed a minimum of 50,000 miles between cleans and a minimum life of 100,000 miles. I see it as a momey saver as much as a performance gain. If I was buying again,I would buy a panel filter to fit the standard air box rather than the cone that I bought, that needed a DiY shield folding and a cold air intake fitting.

Was it not proven that the standard setup with a K&N panel filter will produce a gain, whereas as nearly all aftermarket cone filters actually cause a decrease in power over the rev range?

Think it's to do with the inability to get the same cold air feed that the standard setup gets. The K&N just helps it breathe slightly better than the standard filter.

I'm contemplating removing my K&N and going back to stock.

It sounds awesome top end, but just too noisy low down. Along with the exhaust on my car (was fitted when i got it) it makes it sound like i'm thrashing it at 2K, sounds too 'grunty'.

Works for my Dyson DC14 :P And its washable and reusable...

Get a good few months between washes and that includes the hardfloor cleaning too... 5 bedrooms, 3 hallways, 3 bathrooms (two are combi with toilet, one is toilet and bathroom seperate) and 2 living rooms, a dining room, the stairs (2 flights) etc... She does the job but is only out once a week... Starts first time has a sports setting for the track (well, brush bar off for hard floors!)

She's pullin at 280 airwatts (I think it's 1400 motorwatts...)

My last dyson had issues but we got her a new motor and she runs nice too :P

But the OE filter actually filters the air! Filters are cheaper than engines.
BTW, Numatic (Henry) every time! Dyson - proving the power of advertising. Tell the people often enough that a flimsy, unreliable, over priced pile of junk is a quality product, and plenty will believe it! Enough to make you a multi millionaire, anyway.

Henrys are next to Godliness.

Have heard mixed reviews on replacement filters. The Pipercross filter was recently fitted to a 325i in a BMW magazine and apparently gave minor gains when tested on a dyno (with before and after runs). Anther test using just a measurement of air flow rated the BMW one as best.

I think ITg is the best filter to get, also make up a heat sheild for it and use a ram air pipe from somewhere convienient into the shielded area and you are laughing.

some also rate the standard M3 AFM based airbox.

I had an unbranded cone filter on my car when I got it, but was still given the original airbox. I wasn't sure if the cone filter was doing anything that the standard filter was, so I swapped them over and noticed nothing, apart from the noise. So I sold the cone filter to mate and bought a K&N panel for something like £35. That made a difference (all be it not huge), plus I wont need to get it changed every time it get a service!

Makes no sound difference what so ever :( , and I only ever get 18-24mpg anyway and it's made no difference, the only thing I can report is that with the heat shield and the air intake, the throttle response is better and especiaaly when it's cold :D
