upgrading turbo ?

Hi guys..

Ive got a T3 turbo with a .63 hotside.. im only running it at about 7psi and the car produces 300lft of torque. .. but im just wondering, rather than cranking the boost upto 10psi, would i see more power from a different turbo? like lets say a T34 ??

Crank it up to 10psi for now and start saving for a holset.

so would a slightly bigger turbo like a T34 or T35 gimme a bit more power at the same psi ??

That depends on your exhaust setup. turbo manifold, turbine and exhaust.
most likely not the compressor as much.

well mines a flipped manifold which im planning on swopping for a log type and the rest is a 2.5" custom with a vortex back box.. suppose i'll just have to try one and see.. !

yeah well i noticed at 12psi on a cossie 4x4 ts i was going through head gaskets like nobodies business so something with a bigish hot side is def needed and also takes a lot of unnesecary back pressure off the block

I have read and been told that a 2.5" zaust is good for 500bhp but anything over and you will need bigger !!

where did you read that?
One E30 turbo owner was using a "2.5 and when changed to "3 had to re tune the whole setup
as the engine was breathing so much better.
Matt325is on E30tech, made one of the first home built turbo systems.

can you provide a link to this 500hp "2.5 you speak of?

while 500hp worth of air can be pushed through a "2.5 pipe it doesn´t mean it´s the best option.
Do you want backpressure? All backpressure in the exhaust does is slow down the turbo as the pressure
differential across the turbine blades get´s less and less. i.e the air will begin to move slower and slower.
Not only that. it slows down the flow out of the engine which results in more chances of detonation.

so best bet would be a 3" zaust and bigger turbo for more power? but would i lose a bit of my Torque by gaining the xtra BHP ?

depends if you really want to keep the powerband from 2k or 3.5k.
it will most likely have more power but since it will come on a bit stronger depending on your boost level
it will feel slower until it reaches maximum boost.

You really should get a bigger turbo and "3,, do some datalogging runs now, and save the time from say 2k in 3rd until redline, do the same after you change things, maintain same boost and see how faster it will be.

Alex what is modest boost?

Erel the cost of turning up the boost is Nil, mine seems fine @ 0.85bar on standard c/r! but my FI knowledge is pretty basic.

Agreed mate.. suppose i will take that route first and take it from there! But we all know what happens !! GREED ! kicks in and we want more !

I'd say modest would be from 7 to 12psi
