i've been wanting to do this for some time, i've been reading another thread and there's too much crap about bio fuels.

i've got a 88 325

all i want to know is what i need, ie engine i know, what gearbox can i use mine or transplant from a 525tds which i hope to get, prop ? fuel system ? dde ?etc.

I wouldn't be using an old BMW diesel engine in anything, too much to go expensively wrong plus you have fitting isues such as EWS, fitting a diesel lift pump in the tank etc etc. M51's use Bosch DDE which has an electronic throttle so you'll need to ditch the throttle pedal/cable and fit one of these instead. The M51 is also very heavy. The E36 unit won't fit into an E30 without an E34 diesel sump and yes, they are different to the petrol sump.

Use the M51 gearbox but you will need to change the diff for a lower ratio. Not sure on the prop.

thanks mate i was tired when i read it , couldn't see what i was looking at
