Thanks :D
I ran/built/uprated Cossies for years so i doubt i'll need deeper pockets than i did for that lol :)
It'll only get used for bimbling about so i'm sure it'll be fine.

depends to what degree you played with cozzies..........

my last rs500 engine stood me 23k

these m5s are an expensivecar to run and by that i mean properly

do you have EDC ?

they are just at that age where MAFS,suspension, gearboxes, diffs start to play up

how many miles has it done?

does your cold start pump kickin to wake the neighbours??

Not sure if i have EDC or not its a 1993 3.8 if that helps?
What does this cold start pump sound like? I do get a bit of a weird noise when it starts from cold which goes away after its been running for a minute or two :? Should i be worried?
Its done loads of miles but has had a fortune spent on it in the last year or two inc the 4.5k engine rebuild 40k ago.

no you shouldnt be worried
nice that its still working

it injects fresh air into exhaust gases so it would pass usa emissions

they are very rich running especially when cold and it is supposed to stop after a short while

mines a 1993 3.8 too.

if things are correct and you have edc then you should have a wider wheel at rear but after all these years that isnt the best pointer

EDC is electronic damper control
brilliant when it works but 2k just for struts when they leak

right hand side of dash cluster there will be a switch if you have it with "s" and "p" on it

you may well have got a good en

the engine build is a nice thing

a bare head is 4k

No EDC then mate which i'm pleased about :D

Is it possible to buy a new set of Bilsteins or the like without paying 'mortgage' money then?

The things that need attention straight away are the viscous coupling which is fecked and it seems a bit 'wooly' at the front although going from the bills most things up front have been replaced.

I have seen at least 2 bills for rear springs after broken ones were discovered so i'm guessing these are a weak point?

Idle is pretty good although there is a very slight miss but i suspect it needs plugs.

No real hesitation on acceleration but it doesn't seem to have a lot at low rpm. Over about 4k and especialy between 5 and 6k it pulls like a train 8)

Light throttle seems ok too.

valve clearences are absolutely vital on these cars and play a big part in how they run

they eat plugs and my advice is use oem spec

at 4k they pull real hard

mafs wear out over time (350ish from bosch)

oxygen sensor also plays a big part in idle and smoothness

check its had one of them?? (75 quid so its not a biggy)

main problem is wires to sensor underneath go brittle

same goes for water temp sensor which is on left hand side of engine on pipe that runs up lhs of engine(as you look at car from front) the sensor is blue

the wiring to this sensor is known to go very brittle and break

they also run coil packs on top of each plug and these can fail or start to break down (50 quid ish)

jon

ask me how i know prices!!!

All 3.8s have EDC (extremely distressing cost !) suspension. The optional nurburgring pack gives you wider rear wheels, thicker rear anti roll bar and a dash mounted switch. Tourings had the wider rears and fatter roll bar as standard. The switch can be retrofitted easily to any 3.8 as the wiring is already there.

Jon, hows the turd going ? have you washed it yet ? :)

Cheers for the info Jon i'll give it good going over as soon as we get some better weather.
I might even run it down to BMW to get them to run a diagnostic on it just to see if anything is on its way out.

gcorky - I've always had a thing about e34's mate and have owned loads of them :D

Bob - I'll see what BMW say about the valve clearances when i drop it down to them but i'll do them myself.

Pete - I'll see if i can find this switch somewhere but i'm not sure i want to fit it and find the suspension is fecked lol

Max - My only plans at the moment are to keep both it and my bank account in the black so it can stay as is for now :) What do you mean by F/I?

Can this be disconnected if its not pariculaly needed?
It fires up about 30 secs after you start the engine from cold and goes off about 2 mins later and is loud :?
If it can't be disconnected is it an expensive item and is replacement a ball-ache??
Cheers Spadge..
