will these fit after carrying out a 5 stud conversion or will there be a need to modify arches ? The wheels in question are staggered, not sure what "J" they are.

You will ideally want spacers to bring them out if you did the 5 stud conversion using E30 M3 parts, should fit ok if using E36 stuff.

Been doing some research, found some 4 - 5 stud adapters, less hassle than the conversion but is it safe?

E36 wheels are a suitable offset to work with spacers / adapters.
7.5 and 8.5 x 17 et41.
However I'm not keen on 4x100 to 5x120 adapters as there will always be one hole which overlaps and I've never seen a solution I would be totally happy with.

I had e36 328 staggered rims on my tourer with 20mm adapters, i had them for a year and a half with no issues at all. I have a thread on here somewhere. they did look the tits!! Vdub boys been using adapters for years!!

Can you get these adapters less than 20mm?
