a noisy Layshaft is common Pete, usually due to the tickover being too low ? it will still last forever

Using the correct oil helps. Not ATF!

^^^ +1!!
Use of ATF is a daft idea...
Layshaft is definitely the issue here - cured with a rebuild but if you are prepared to put up with it, it will last a looooooong time without going wrong. Putting up the idle speed a touch works wonders!!

I have used EP80W90 or EP80, both are fine.
Oh and as for ATF, i tried it years ago upon recommendation by a well known Kent based BMW specialist as a cure for stiff gear changes when cold.
Yes it worked but when hot it was to noisey so i changed back to EP80 and its been fine since.

Use this. it hardly thins with temperature. No rattle on start up and smooth gear changes. Once fully warmend up the rattle is still there a tiny bit but overall it makes a massive improvement.
I bought it from oilman.
Thanks for the recommendation but i'll stick with the correct EP80 as i dont get any chatter now on idle at any temp.sam325is wrote:http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/atd.aspxbss325i wrote:Oh and as for ATF, i tried it years ago upon recommendation by a well known Kent based BMW specialist as a cure for stiff gear changes when cold.

That's correct, some manual trans are meant to use ATF but the getrag 260 used in the 325i is meant to use convertional EP80.
