I would take it to a reputable AC specialist for them to check, I'd imagine that if bearings etc were shot (lose?
sorry) then it would send the compressor U/S but maybe re-sealing a second hand one from a scrapper would be a cheaper option than new?
Not really my subject, living in England means I don't have any need for air-con, but as no-one else seems to be posting right now I thought I'd have a go!
Where is everyone by the way? Is the forum acting up or something? (I couldn't log on a couple of days ago, but other people had posted while I was locked out
 ...)

I've been using the same A/c specialist for 6 years and they always seemed straight with me, it seems odd that they immediately told me i need a new compressor just because their fancy light showed some fluid loss. So rebuilding is definitely an option?

depends on where the loss occurred dude
its fairly normal for an unsed and "dry" AC comp to leak @ the shaft seals, provided the system is Evacuated properly, and will hold a vacuum for 1 hour, the seals should sort themselves once the system is recomissioned and back in regular( once a week minimal, even in winter for 10 mins or so ) useage.
Difficult to say whether they are taking the pi$$ TBH.
how much charge has been lost ? ( if its reclaimed then there's usally a little more than the charge weight due to oil pullup )
What Freon is in use, good old R12( mustard gas) or R134a( low duty shite for the greenies lol )

Ant, I'm afraid I haven't got a clue what you're talking about! I do know it was converted to r134a a couple of years ago.
