im thinkin about purchasing a 1990 325i touring with automatic transmission. tourings are already rare where i live and its almost impossible to find it with manual transmission :(

off what car would i need to get the manual gear box and how hard is the swap? is there a section on this forum that covers the tranny swaps?

thanx

a 325 MANUAL GEARBOX WOULD BE A GOOD START. a PEDAL BOX FROM ANY 3 SERIES MANUAL WILL DO, NEED THE CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER WITH THE GEARBOX, THE PROPSHAFT AND FLYWHEEL ALONG WITH THE CLUTCH, (sorry caps lock was on), gearstick gaitor and a bearing to push in the end of the crank to support the gearbox lay shaft in the crank as it is narrower than on an auto, wkill also need to get the pope work for the slave cylinder that runs from the pedal box to the slave cylinder around the bulkhead behind the engine, change radiator if you like as gear oil cooler is in the rad on an auto, discoonect the green and black wires behind the passenger glove box and recoonect otherend back into the loom to disable the auto inhibiter relay, blled the salve cylinder and away you go.
A days work
I'll come and do it for you if you pay for my ticket and accomodation!!

TPS switch is different on cars with switchable auto, but not on those with ordinary autos. Don't know what happens if you use this switch on a manual though. Connector is different, so a change of TPS would need alterations or a replacement of the engine loom as well.
Additional to the list above is the reverse light switch loom, and the starter wires are black/yellow, not green/black.

I'm just about to this very conversion. Just as soon as soon as I get my new MOT this week. So, looking to do this weekend.

I'm about to order the end of the crank pilot bearing and accompanying parts from BMW. Do i need a new spacer ring as it is a different part number compared with the auto?

Also, thought I'd pop on a shorter shift while I'm there. I read the z3 1.9 is fine (with an "adjustment" to the rod) but some say the 2.8 is better if slightly notchy. (I have a Z3 2.8 car and the gear change is notchy in that if you don't disengage the clutch fully.)
I read here somewhere that you have to remove the propshaft rubber guibo to use the 2.8 gear lever? :?
