I've had an e30 sorn for years and have been tinkering to get it back to a saleable condition. Put a new pump and battery in and it turns over but i don't hear the pump working. I checked the fuse (7?) and it seems ok. I read something about the cps possible being a problem but i'm not very clued up on the electrics or mechanics generally so are there any easy things i should be checking? I've got a multimeter but not diagnostic needles to get into relays etc.

Thats a fantastically handy diagnostic chart. Can anyone point me to the type of test bulb i should be using for the coil test? Iv'e looked around a bit but not sure if what i'm seeing on ebay is what's required.

Bulb you require is an ordinary 12 volt lamp with a couple of bits of wire attached. I use an old E30 indicator side repeater lamp in its holder, with about 6" of loom attached, but the easiest one to use is from the interior dome light - easy to attach the bits of wire to.
First thing to do is to check whether you have sparks at a plug when you crank the engine. Either use a spare spark plug, or remove one from the engine, and lay it on its side on the rocker cover.
