about to drop in a M42 from a e36 into an e30.

can we use the existing e36 engine mount arms?

also...
we will be using the e36 direct drive Getrag manual gearbox that has a wider distance between the rear mounts.
can the e36 gearbox crossmember bolt onto the e30 chassis?

Not sure about the engine mounts, i use an e30 gearbox mount with an e36 box on the back of an m42!

Every E36 box I've used in an E30 (both getrag and ZF) has used the standard E30 crossmemeber.

interesting.
the rear box mount positions are at least 2 inches wider than the mount positions on the e30 cross member.
I'll get the getrag box part number and a pic...

Same here. Needs modifying if using an engine/box combination that puts the box at an angle, but the spacing is the same.
Shouldn't be a massive problem to fabricate from scratch - it supports very little weight in an E30, which uses the mid position engine mount holes on yhe block.
