Hi all, got a slight issue with a engine swap.
Put m20b25 lump out of a H reg into a G reg 1.6 .

Car turns over fine, fuel is flowing, there is spark. But no fire.
Not even a splutter :? Thought this is all that was required to fire ?

Have had engine in bits while was out, mainly cleaning it, timing belt, water pump all been changed, blue and brown temp sensors replaced, gasket, etc replaced.

Only thing is I had a fully charged booster pack on the positive and negative terminals. Is this enough or should I have a battery connected too?

Fuel pipe that had fuel flowing out from when cranking, does this go on the bottom of fuel rail or directly into fuel reg?

Cheers

Fuel pipe with fuel flowing goes directly to the rail. Regulator pipe is the return.

After trail and error, I've got fuel pipes in that configuration. Thanks for confirmation on that.
Any other things to check ?
Would the c101 plugs match or do I need swap any wires ?
Is it possible have fuel and spark and no fire?

It's possible you've flooded it. Try removing the spark plugs and let it dry out for a few hours.

You could also try spraying carb/brake cleaner down the throttle body while cranking it over.

There was a good chance that the C101s didn't match (check the wiki), but if that was the case, this thread would be "why did my engine loom catch fire when I tried to start my engine swapped E30", not "why doesn't it start".
Take at least one spark plug out after cranking and see a) whether it's completely flooded, as Speedtouch says above, or b) whether it's bone dry.

Ill have a read through wiki mate, knowledge is good :)

Hoping it something as simple as been flooded, just after a long tiring day, putting engine in and plumbing it in amongst other issues, I don't tend to think straight/logically at end of day

Will have another crack at it after work and try your suggestions.
Will keep you updated, thanks

It lives !!

Had a good read around night before and went back with a fresh head and ideas ..
First thing I come across while on the net was C191 plug .. didn't recall plugging or seeing that .. Found it was the loom for the injectors.

Had a look and it wasn't plugged in :o: , completely forgot about it as was hidden away in between the inlet ..
Tried starting ..... NO fire, not even a splutter :? ..

Tried some "easy start" and it tried to fire..
Pulled fuel feed pipe from rail and tried starting car and was now saw the fuel been pumped into cup was brown/black in colour ...

Pulled fuel filter off and hooked up fuel pump direct to battery and pumped through all fuel thru from tank into a bucket .. this was actually pretty clean looking fuel ...

Put new fuel filter in, fresh fuel and it FIRED !!

Took old filter apart and it was manky and dirty looking .. Does filter material start decaying as such ? car has been sitting for around two years

I suppose it is possible that the filter may become clogged with stale fuel/varnish if it's been sitting about for 2 years with fuel residue in it.
