Finally put some miles on the turd - 80 mile round trip to Jim's meet yesterday and 250 miles roadtrip to wales today.

Noticed when I got back from Jims and a couple of times today that after a good run when idling there is a rattle from the gearbox which goes as soon as you put the clutch in.

Is this the standard getrag layshaft chatter ?

Never had it before on my other E30's - the box is otherwise quiet in all gears and the shift quality is excellent.

Would a change to ATF fluid help ? Is it one of those things that can be lived with or does it need fixing

I havent changed the gearbox oil since I had the car and its odds on its the original fluid or if not its still very old

I think the change to ATF makes it worse and is to cure poor cold shifting. Regards the rattle I understand all G260's do it and will go on forever like it.

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

Cheers Dave - its only really noticeable after its been running for a while at speed. As long as its not likely to shat itself I can live with it :D

A lot of cars with relatively light crank and flywheel do this, its due to the fluctuations in engine speed causing the input shaft of the gear box to chatter either in the clutch or teeth of the gear.
A rough idle will exaggerate it as mine went totally after fixing a small air leak.

My 320i did this, when changing the clutch, the release bearing was replaced and it cured the issue
