Not sure about dropping an M20 in but dropping an M52 in is an easy job, I've done this swap with my brother on his car: http://328compact.co.uk/ - might be some stuff there that will help

The M20 will not fit. The sump bulge is always at the front and the E36 always has it at the back. Also the M20 won't pass a catalyst test because it hasn't got one, or a lambda probe.
It's not going to work.

Regarding the cat test if you can prove the age of the engine they should MOT it on the engine age.Andyboy wrote:The M20 will not fit. The sump bulge is always at the front and the E36 always has it at the back. Also the M20 won't pass a catalyst test because it hasn't got one, or a lambda probe.
