hi guys i been given a e36 316i compact from 96 with a blow engine. cloud u guys tell me if i cloud do a swap with my e30 325 gear. as i got a 325 with just engine+gearbox, all the connection, i think got all the gear to do the convercion. is it a hard job, will i have to make many mods to fix the engine+gearbox, and that. thanks rick

Not sure about dropping an M20 in but dropping an M52 in is an easy job, I've done this swap with my brother on his car: http://328compact.co.uk/ - might be some stuff there that will help :)

The M20 will not fit. The sump bulge is always at the front and the E36 always has it at the back. Also the M20 won't pass a catalyst test because it hasn't got one, or a lambda probe.

It's not going to work.

Regarding the cat test if you can prove the age of the engine they should MOT it on the engine age.
