My e30 is currently rather *ahem* loud.. was wondering where to get a reliable dB meter from or something to test exactly how loud, seeing as trackdays have dB limits I'd rather not be paying for one then fail a noise test.. Quite fancy a pop at Cadwell which has a 105dB limit :)

Dads m50/52 with tubular manifold, scorpion back box did 90db on the static but its the driveby noise which is also a problem as they make a fair amount of induction noise,

yours didnt sound that much louder than his when i heard it at aces.

Wise decision Dan - seen a fair few ppl turned away from Bedford Autodrome failing the drive by but passing the static.

That was rev'd 'gently' under no load.. On full throttle and 5k+ it is rather loud! Or even part throttle down the road.. Might be my paranoia though

Its 2" all the way through with E30 M3 Supersprint Race system, and S50 6 branch..

I sometime do actually use my noggin.. It tends to be dangerous though (S50 rebuild..) so I avoid it if at all possible. In fact, Ive been slowly killing it with beer :D

Pop down to your local track when they have a trackday on, they will do you a noise test if you ask nicely :)

Or see if any local motorclubs have one that you could use?

May be worth popping in to see my boss as I know he is a member of Chelmsford motor club

Remember most places test static at 60 cm to100 cm from the tail pipe at a 45degree angle idle to 4000rpm.

Drive by is usually conducted at approx 4000 rpm too, not sure how they assertain distance or angle though.

Stick a 4 cyl rev counter in it, that way the revs will be lower than showing and the engine will sound quieter - if the sound checker thinks you are at the right RPMs winkeye

At bedford we had to hold the revs at 4000 for the static & got 90db as 1an said.
When I revved it initially it went over 6k and off the testers scale !! Told me to be careful on the drive by, but never had any problems

With the old M20 engine with same centre box (no baffles) and back box at Brands Hatch we got a static of 94db !

Not sure how you would test "drive by" without going on track day. Most seem to get caught by this if they are in a group of cars and trip it regular ! :D
