Fellas quick question. If I replace my dual mass flywheel with a single mass do I need to change the friction plate too?

Yep.
Dual mass plate isn't springloaded, where s the singlemass frictionplate is.
Oh, and it's alot dearer too.

its the layshaft in the gearbox (gearbox rattle) nothing to worry about. i know many E30's with the mods that do the same

Layshaft noise usually disappears when you press the clutch, this noise doesn'tmcbonio wrote: It still does it when you shut the engine off with the clutch pressed in which makes me think its not the gearbox and more the flywheel/bearing.

My m30 and box have no mods, its an m30b35 with a getrag 260/5 box from the engine.
Its deffo the flywheel, it rattles on shut down with clutch in or out. With engine running and parked on an incline it knocks too so can't be the gearbox as thats totally disengaged.
I shut the car off whilst in motion today in 4th gear, the engine shut down smoothly with no rattle, which confirmed my suspicion of the flywheel not rattling when its loaded up with the clutch and gearbox.
So parts.!.;

i have a decent M30 guibo if you want it as i'm fitting a 325i prop therefore only need a 325i guibo

Yeah I put fresh ATF in it about a month ago when I did all the shifter bushes. Shifts beautifully.! The car has no running issues at all.! Flywheel still rattles.!
I might just drop the gearbox and remove flywheel and run the engine to make sure before I splash out on a 250 quid flywheel.... I'm assuming its ok to run the engine with no flywheel?

i'd defo split them first have have a good inspection in there, you might not need to run the engine. If you do i'd do it for a very short time as the crank maybe suffer harmonic vibrations which could cause undue bearing wear, personally i'd think hard before taking that risk.
i bet its something simple, loose bolt or maybe the little dowel - part 7 here come loose

I don't think it's anything small and loose inside, the rattle is much heavier than that, it can be heard and felt inside the car.
I personally think the bearing or DMF is bad and allows loads of play in the 2 halves. When the crank comes to a stop the extra play allows the other half of the DMF to jolt back and forth.
Look at this video,
Or this,
Once those DMF springs between the 2 halves go which absorb the shock from the engine to clutch the DMF just rattles like a tin can.

i see, well in that case it should be easy to ID when you have the gear box removed
i'd get over to the BMW 5 forum and look for a e28 M535i flywheel.
more expense though

Rav has a e28 single mass wheel for me if I want it, but it needs a different clutch friction plate one with springs on. But we can't find a part number... Would make a nice upgrade

Nearly right.
The E28 singlemass flywheel needs an E28m535i clutch kit.
It's the custom jobbie I have that needs the other clutch which is elusive atm

Dunno if any of these numbers help.

Thats a Sachs E28 3.5 friction plate.
My flywheel is E28 525i, the lightest out the lot at 7.5KG, 3.5's are 10KG.
You can use ANY E28 M30 flywheel and ANY E28 M30 240mm friction plate but the pressure plate must be from a 3.5 to handle the power.

Not sure on the size difference, if any, of the release bearing, but don't see why not.jimboe39540i wrote:Rav, i have this clutch plate, cover plate and flywheel but was rather hoping to re-use my M30e34 535i release bearing and it's in good nick and all fits nicely....do you think this would work ok?E28m535i clutch kit
