It was then time for the big one, the drivers side floor and footwell. I did try to find some donor footwell/floor panels but none were forthcoming so we had to fabricate it all.

The water pipes froze on Wednesday so we had to resort to making tea like this:

Image

It takes a lot of snow to fill a kettle with water.

The last bit was behind the fuse box, I only have one photo of this area when the grinding had been done, it was getting late by then.

We then etch primed and sealed the whole lot with this stuff, apparently it's very good, but also very expensive:

Then I just had to spend the day yesterday putting the whole thing back together again, there's a fair bit of the interior still to do and it needs a really good clean:

Having just posted all this it looks quite straightforward but it was a lot of hard work especially as we only had the use of the unit and the garage for a limited time. Well worth it though.

Cheers Guys,

It's not going to be a daily, but I'll hopefully get it out a fair bit over the summer. As previously mentioned I'll take it down to Le Mans and away for a few other weekends with maybe the odd track day here and there.

It could really do with a respray as it's had various parts painted when it had the rear arches done so some of the paint is relatively new and bright with the rest of it looking a bit tired and pinkish. I need to save up a bit for that though.

At present a good clean, clay bar, polish, etc will have to do, once I get it moted of course.

Eventually I want to put a 2.8 M20 in it, it already has a big bore throttle body and BTB manifold so a 2.8 would work well in there. With the exception of the pistons I have most of the bits to build the engine and have a nice ported 885 head to finish it off with, I just need to find the time to do it.

One more thing sorted:

I have had H&R anti roll bars fitted to my E30 for a few years now and due to the increased diameter and slightly different shape compared to the oem ones the wheels have always caught on them when at full lock. I have Hartge 16" wheels and have tried both 215 and 205 tyres and they both catch on the arb.

It has previously always managed to get through the mot (even though it shouldn't have) but the last time it went in for one they did flag it up as a fail, therefore I thought I should something about it.

I discovered that steering angle limiters are available from BMW for the E36 (part no. 32 11 1 140 479) so I thought I would give them a go:

Image

I fitted these but was still having rubbing issues. So I worked out the thickness of limiter that I would need (using some cycle headset spacers that I had lying around), then had some bits laser cut from the required 5mm steel plate and welded them to the E36 limiters.

And then fitted them between the rack and tie rods:

I do now have a greater turning circle, but no more rubbing:

Image

I also changed to E46 tie rods while I was at it as the ones I had on there (E30 ones I think) were not vented and were destroying the rubber gaiters.

Almost ready for an mot now...

Interesting that you say that... I was doing an alignment on mine over the weekend and noticed that my 3-4 month old gaiters were essentially crumbling apart. I had read on numerous sites that venting wasn't essential.

By "destroying", what damage were you seeing exactly?
