Simply not true! Insurance companies are bound by the small print in their policies, and, while there is nothing to stop any particular company including any conditions that they so choose, no policy I've ever held has had any such exclusions.johnl320 wrote:People saying " insurance is the main thing" are talking utter bollox. You think your insurance company is going to pay out if you have an accident and they find out you didn't have tax or an MOT you'rre sadly mistaken.
If you do get caught or have an accident prepare to be dry bummed.
The company I use for things like this is 'Tempcover.com' - one of the few that will provide day insurance for cars as old as E30s.
Simply not having a valid tax disc on a car that you have just bought and are making a single journey home in, will not be a problem, although technically still illegal.
Your insurance will not show up on the database, though, so make sure you have a printed document with you.
If there is the slightest chance that you have been 'clocked' on the journey, it will be a good idea to tax the car when you get home, back to the start of the month in which you drove it.
This is the one I fell foul of once, and although I only got a nominal fine of £15 for not having the current tax, the car had not been taxed for over a year previously, and this is an 'absolute offence', meaning that I had to pay all the back tax!

I use E car insurance as my insurer and find that I can just swap the policy over for the day if required. Online insurance is all good for customiseability, I wonder what its like when I need it!
But the way I look at it is that I will hopefully never be at fault and I can deal directly with the at fault insurers and not get mine involved at all. If its my fault, its only TPF&T so it won't affect me

i know its not bollox, my work partner wrote of his evo 8 with no mot, insurance paid out almost the full amount. he'd missed the cars first due mot by 3 months. all the insurance did was deduct the cost of an mot test (£50) from his £14000 insurance settlementjohnl320 wrote:People saying " insurance is the main thing" are talking utter bollox. I notice that the small print for ecar does specify a valid MOT certificate though (although the car I'm collecting does).
ive got a set of polish plates from an e30 thats been scrapped

You might as well have not had insurance, it's invalid without an MOT.rubber_duck89 wrote:i drove my 1st 316 home with out tax or mot it had insuranse which is the main thing, but we took a 20 mile detour because of an ANPR camera we saw on the way out

Depends entirely on the insurance co. in question.cecotto479 wrote:Rubbish.Mr_Gerbic_iS wrote: You might as well have not had insurance, it's invalid without an MOT.
For instance, ecar, mentioned up the thread does require the car to have a valid MOT certificate, and you will not be insured if it hasn't.

I'm in the motor trade lad's, and some policy's are anulled without an MOT, I know a few lad's who've got points for not having MOT, due to the court proving they weren't insured neither, it's a bit of a grey area, and is used a lot by insurance company's to riggle out of paying up in cases of theft and accidents. as for driving without tax, stop being a tight arse and find a friendly local recovery operator, I occasionally do the odd quick cash job with my recovery truck, or borrow my mates trade plates to move motor's about, is £30-50 really excessive for the peace of mind of not having to worry about getting pulled or breaking down in a fresh motor. I've had a few di**heads to tight to pay me £25 to move a car, then destroy both their car's by trying to tow it on a piece of washing line with misted up windows and no servo for the brakes, and I've enjoyed having a good laugh at their expense, LOL
Tax car online then get at refund for the remaining months, it'll cost about £16 as you can only get refunds for whole months eg tax it for 12 then claim back 11.
The thing is the details the police and dvla use can be about 1 month behind (I deal with abandoned vehicles for Cardiff Council) so the car could easily show up as no insurance or tax if they did run the plates.

If I can't fix it I'll f**k it up so bad nobody can!!
