I ran a compression test on my M44 engined e36 318is today.

The result's are as follows...

Number 4 cylinder : 11bar
Number 3 cylinder : 9.5bar
Number 2 cylinder : 11bar
Number 1 cylinder : 11bar

I re ran the test again on cylinder number 3 & it still showed 9.5bar.

From what the Hanyes manual says this tolerance is blow the specified requirements?

What needs to be done to recifiy this?

The way i see it is...

Head will need to come off when engine is stone cold.
Possibly renew all the valve stem oil seals?
Possibly needs new valves?
Piston rings will need to be replaced?
The head wont need to be skimmed? (as the headgasket hasnt blow)
Head bolts will need to be replaced.

Does that about cover it, or is there something else that i have missed?

Regards,
Pete.

First of all i ran the engine upto opertaing temperature.
I then removed the DME relay & the fuel pump replay.
Removed all the spark plus.
Cranked engine over for approx 3-5seconds with the accelerator pedal pressed to the floor.
Took the readings for each cylinder.

I don't want to sell it.

I want to get it to be a nice running / handling family car!

I have already replaced all the suspension on it & lots of other suspension related items too!

Pete.

put a bit of oil down the plug hole and retest.if it improves it suggests a ring or bore problem.if it stays the same poss valves.the stem oil seals have no effect on this.
