I think there are some speaker pods you can buy, which raise the 6x9 above the steel frame under the shelf. but it is abit IN YOUR FACE!
I have been thinking about making a set of pods that mount underneath the steel frame, then have some low key speaker grills ontop...... but havent done much about it yet...

I used 1" MDF rings... screwed them into the parcel shelf, then screwed the speakers into the rings... looked a bit gash untill i dyed my parcel shelf, and thought I'd see what the rings would look like sprayed with carpet dye... Came out quite well I think

I never fancied fitting 6x9's myself but always thought that if I did I' first screw a roughly cut mdf 'ring' to the grills that came with them, run a router around said rings with a 'stop bearing' (dont know the correct technical term!) around it so that the ring was the exact same size as the grille; then bond the ring to the shelf with bridging compound (chopped strand and epoxy resin). The speaker would then sit as low as possible and have a very solid mounting to the car. Also it would be beter sealed (acoustically coupled) to the boot space. The square hole could then be enlarged a little (carefull not to loose the folded shape of the shelf) so as to aid airflow through it. Bit of dynamat all over the shelf and voila! The shelf would need cutting so the whole lot can poke through.
Just a thought.

isn't it the seat back thats the actual structural part so theorectically a little nibble at the hole cant hurt.

i think the seat belt are mounted on the metal piece of the shelf and so the only wat to find out if it has weakend it is to stack it and see...to risky for me..lol

I bought some autoleads "universal" 6x9 speaker spacers, got em home, got em out, and they didnt fit, my fusion 6x9s were about 1/4 of an inch to wide. took them back and the bloke refused to believe me, till i got them out and proved it.... wouldnt have ben a problem if halfruads had the bloody infinity ones i wanted in the first place (they NEVER have what i want when i go in for it) Looks like i will have to do the mdf speaker rings, but i can never get a decent cut....trial and error i guess
