They are great cars but I'd much rather a mk1 with a G60 lump
E30 vs Golf GTI mk2 - Discuss!

bought a small bumper mk2 as a sensible runaround for the mrs.
fantastic car, for something so light it feals so solid and so well put together it's amazing. really not sure how vw managed it! practical too, loads of interior space, bit boot, nice simple easy to work on engine bay. It's only an 8v, but sounds great and pulls really well.
comparing a 325i sport to a mk2 gti? come off it, theyre different car's that do a different job in a different pricerange. i'd rather drive a grands worth of mk2 gti than a grands worth of e30. the little hatchback will probably be a a lot less rusty too!
would prefer a mk1, but there's a lot of reasons to chose a mk2 instead. condition for the money, even scruffy mk1s needing work go for 2k. theyre less practical, have crap brakes, arent that much lighter, and feel like an old car. you can really feel the money vw invested when they designed the mk2. we puposely chose a small bumper mk2 (with early 1/4light front windows as a bonus) for some proper old skool style. really looks it's best parked amongst a sea of modern toss. a perfect 80s timewarp car

i have a brand new in white set of big bumpers if you're interested? had them on my driver for about a week then wrapped it round a lamp post..boooo! then bought a gti 8v for £250 off ebay which was MINT condition, tried to insure it...£3750! so took the engine out my driver and stuck it in the gti and put webers on it...nice but had a long distance bird on the go and cost me a fortune in juice, naturally i finished with her not the car...then got a punto turbo diesel!harry_p wrote:bought a small bumper mk2 as a sensible runaround for the mrs.

mm veedubs are cool, both mk1 and mk2 golfs are great, i've spent more time with the former and owned two of them inc a 2l 8v. My mate's runner mk2 digifart 8v could keep up with my IS when standard, even though it burnt more oil than petrol (it had done silly miles).

LOL, Talkin $£Â£$%"£ you recon a mk2 8v can touch a 325is you must be tripping!!!
LOL, u need to take some driving lessons people,
I had a nice 8v for about a month, crap!! my 1986 90,000 mk2 xr2 fiesta wanked on it, 75% of my mates have all had all types of golfs, corrado's, MK1 golf all the way
1.8 campagne edition best, ok rust on scuttle's and bottom, but what do you expect for a 25 year old car!! change the 4 head lights to 2, put a s3 throttle body on it, or even better g60 it
batters a mk2 8valve and would get battered by a 325 i sport!!!!!!
JOKERS!!

Hmmmmmmmmm Bisto
to elaborate on andy's reply, a mk1 does not "batter" a mk2 8v golf in the slightest, and mk2 golf 8v has easily a good 20hp over an horrible xr2 and a better power to weight ratio.
while i'm at it, it's a campaign not a campagne, S3 throttle body doesn't fit a mk1 golf - the former having a single body and the latter a twin. a mk2 digifant/audi body bolts up with minimal fuss and is bigger than the kjet DX 1.8 TB but makes little difference. a fast golf will always contend with a repmobile bmw of a similar era, a 16v golf will give a 325 plenty of trouble, and embarrass the much heavier, yet similar engined IS that was supposed to be a gti rival.

i used to have a mk2 golf, not long after i started driving
loved it, taught me allot about driving for example(you dont need a new car to be cool
)
i would much rather have an E30 hence why have joined this forum to research a bit more,
The E30's are rediculous on insurance for young uns like me so it would not have been an option when i first started driving but the golf was! ok it wasnt a gti but the driver has the same engine

Driver is also 1.6, GTi is 1.8, 8v and 16v.
plus the driver only had standard suspension.
infact, the only good thing about a driver was that it came with a gti bodykit so you could make it look like a gti by just swapping the badges.

Apart from the cut in the rear valence of the car, it wasn't cut away enough to take the dual exhast.

Golf's are ok but why would you want one over an E30!
They under steer, lift off over steer crap weight distribution.
They are just not drivers cars!

I have a Mk1 Campaign AND and Alpina engined Touring!
The mk1 will keep up with a 325i but the chassis is a little flexi which is why I installed better ant roll bars and strut braces now its nice and solid. the mk1 had the A1 chassis and the only difference with the early mk2's was the A2 chassis. The early mk1's were better cars imho. If you are going to get a Golf I highly reccomend it and if insurance is the issue then get a late 1.8 carb mk2 or an early mk1 1.6 they are both great cars and will give you years of joy!
Other than that, do you want a fwd or a rwd and how much money can you spend? the E30 has cost me plenty more money than the GTI but is a totally different type of car. The GTI is much more confident in corners and doent have the RWD element but the E30 is fun in a different way. Also my mk1 is heavier going as a daily driver (bad heaters, loud exhaust, less sound deadening etc...) but the mk2 doesnt suffer any of those issues.
Also as another tip the mk2 16v isnt really much faster than the 8v GTI so if you find a nice 8v GET IT! They are much better on fuel than the E30's and cheaper to insure/maintain AND also fun on a track

i have both at the minute the 325i is 187 brake the golf is 181 bhp the golf is alot faster off the mark[even faster if it had lsd] and handling is spot on with coilovers and strut braces and bigger antirollers i always have a smile when i driver her hugging the corners at speeds the e30 would only dream of but then the 325is has abit of comfort and longer legs when up the gears at speed you just need to keep your head about you the old rwd can slide out on you pretty handy if i was to pick one i couldnt i love both cars they are nearly the same car lol the square looks the lights the seats etc etc the e30 is like a mk2 golf with a boot lol

I have both
,iv'e got a 1990 VW Golf GTi 8v big bumper, and a 1989 BMW 325i Sport, the sport looks a million times better, but the golf is a hell of alot more fun, mine has done 203k,but runs and drives amazing, very quick, feels much quicker than my sport, handles very well, even on the p slot alloys! And sounds great too.
Heavy steering mind, but the gearbox is great!
I bought the GTi or as my friends call it the GiT,lol in december,as a runaround whilst my sport was having quite alot of welding done to it,i was going to sell it once it's back on the road,in a month or so,but i'll be keeping it now
Still i'd rather be driving the sport,i miss it's looks, interior, power steering!
But both of these cars will never come close to the MG Maestro Turbo i had 4 years ago,now that was amazing, off the clock at 150mph,0-60 in 6.5secs,crap brakes, but mine handled very well, not alot could keep up with it on the straight,i even once left a scooby turbo, should of seen the owners face! Wish i'd never of sold it,not many of them left now that are anygood
Still i now have a MG Montego Turbo with stupid BHP,currently having some work done to it,now thats going to be a tool! lol
