3rd it. If it was Black when it rolled out new, then Black it should stay.
Excellent work Si. I know how you felt re the block and an alledged rebuild. My engine had had head work and what a f*cked up mess thet was.

small update, things are moving along nicely now i've found the big dollar for the bodywork. So thats a big relief for me
Barrys bodyshop told me that i should get new doors/bonnet/sunroof tray so i've been sourcing these bits!

Nice red door with no rust. £325+VAT saved there from BMW!

another saving!

New sunroof tray, only 5 left at BMW's main warehouse!
I'm struggling to find a good bonnet! The best i've found is on my touring! But it would look even worse with a black bonnet! So i may treat it to a brand new one.

Look at this sorry sack of rusty sh!te
4 doors are donor cars i know but the rust on this puppy is bad

Barry has some better pic's of the grot!
Anyway the reason i was helping Barry badboy was to chaw some morsels

Long range fuel tank - will look horney all polished

Custom filler pipe on these, It's ok luckily rust wise. You can see the extra pipe for the tank coming off at 90 degrees up through the boot floor. There's another breather for the tank connecting back onto the filler neck

Manifold aswell, do i use this? As it's the right one for the car. I'm not convinced!

no why? It's the original shell and that counts for alot imo. It's a strong shell and none of the rust has taken hold it and it needs sorting now not latter. When it's done i can just drive it/wash it/service it. No issues just enjoy the car. In the garage ready to roll for when i fancy. It's my toy. The shell isn't that bad but i want to keep it the car for a few years, so if there is a scab on the drivers door like there is it gets replaced. Theres some rust underneath the bonnet it's nothing major but it's there and it might come back. same with the sunroof, bootlid. 90% of E30's are like this and this is just bolt on panels! Sad truth.M5pilot wrote:Do you ever wish you'd done a reshell rather than go to this huge expense?
I'm trying to do it once not get a lash up spray job and then regret it when it comes back in 6 months. Don't you wish you'd paid decent money and got a proper paint job on your 4 door? Infact i know the answer to this.
Sal this car is one i'm not planning on selling in a hurry and i want to do the best i can, money aside.
Are you gonna bring my stuff back for Ace 2moro that would be mighty kind of you after all these months

Eh? Si's shell is better than most E30 shells. As soon as you start stripping a 'solid' shell you always find the rust. As Si says also, a new shell would take away from the fact its an Alpina. If your trying to make an E30 'rust free' you will always need to replace a good few panels.M5pilot wrote:Do you ever wish you'd done a reshell rather than go to this huge expense?
Hardly huge expense going into the panels, hes only bought a few. Si, your car is more solid than mine
Great work. Is that Barrys green alphina?

Infact, when I reshelled my C2 2.7 I got nothing but gried from members on here because I claimed it was still an original even though I documented everything and updated everything with Sytners.
I tried to get the paint job done once aswell and the bill was £2000. Was all done under recommendation by a guy who apparently painted Lambo and Ferrari's to a very high standard. You yourself have seen the state of the car and it's horrendous.
I wish I'd known Barry then! Your lucky your taking it to his workplace and I'm 100% sure you'll get a pucka job.
I will give your parts back ofcourse - I did PM you about this but don't get out of work until 7-8pm everyday.

Well people spent all last night telling me i'm mad becuase of the money involved on the spray job! If i'm honest i doubt i'm going to buy another E30. Like i've said i'm not planning on selling it anytime soon once it's finished. The touring is strong solid old workhorse but i won't be driving it forever.
So it's now or never for me and the car!

Same as mine si. I am to get it to the best I can then use it when I want (and not have to) and have an every day hack.Simon13 wrote:Well people spent all last night telling me i'm mad becuase of the money involved on the spray job! I certainly don't make you mad. Far from it. I'd say its probably a sound investment if you look after it. If it looks anywhere near as nice as Barry's it'll be one of the (if not THE) nicest Alpinas out there and THAT alone will demand a premium IF you ever have to sell it. It may sound like a lot of dough but it's more about protecting your investment. You can through shed loads at a car but if the paints shite.....it's worthless. It's the one area you need to throw good money at to be honest.

If you get a MINT car at the end of it and your happy then what other people think is irrelevant.Simon13 wrote:Well people spent all last night telling me i'm mad becuase of the money involved on the spray job! Your putting alot of new panels on it and your having your engine rebuilt and I've seen the pictures of your suspension.
The car is going to be basically like brand new.
That sort of experience is going to have a hefty price tag attached to it.
The good thing about this is that atleast the car is special being a genuine Alpina and not just a normal SE or Sport.
