I will be spraying an mtech kit soon as wanted to know whether I will need lacquer, my car is Scwarz (straight black) code 086, some people have said I will needit otherwise I will get the rat look and some including my local dealer have said I don't so if anyone could confirm?

Depends what paint.I think that acrylic paints do not need lacquer(might be wrong) but 2k does.Shaz done his kit with aerosols but can not remember whether he used seperate lacquer, worth while having a look for his thread.

Best thing to do is ring your local paint shop, most paint shops that I have dealt with have always been helpful with any queries that I have had.Is there any reason why you are getting the cans from main dealers? Paint shops can supply cans that are just as good quality wise and probably cheaper, you can also get all the other bits that you may need:scotch pads/panel wipe and all the sanding papers etc.As they only deal with paints you will find that there advice/knowledge will be a lot of help to you.

2k paint is generally direct gloss,i.e it goes on shiny, any standard basecoats will go on matt,in which case they will need lacquer, you can get gloss back in tins though, which is probably what bmw are selling you. You will use loads of it though to paint a full kit!

As far as i'm aware bmw will supply you with lacquer if it's needed as a package.

If they haven't, then you probably don't need it.

2 k paint is not just gloss as its any paint system that uses 2 parts ie paint and hardner so gloss and base coat is still 2k .
all spary cans are 1k (cellose) if you are using gloss jet black then no you dont need lacquer but if its a base coat black then yes
its not easy getting a good finish on black

Yes, it will show up any/all imperfections in your prep work so be sure it's done properly so you don't have to go back and redo it.

That said, black looks awesome when done properly!

painted various bits in same colour, 2k just means , paint , activator( 50% off paint ie 500ml paint use 250 ml activator ) and 10% thinners.
rub down then give 2 coats of laquer gently rubbing down between coats.

the aerisol cans waste of time get proper 2k paint and do it properly i tried cans years ago poor results sprayed complete vw beetle in my single width garage what i will say is move every thing out the way as noticed speckles of the paint every where end result been told by others is wow

if you need free advise doesnt matter where in the country you are phone scott paints on 01236 767666 excellent advice and products been using them for over 10 years.
