Someone has set up a petition on the Downing Street website protesting against EU proposals to curb or ban the use of cars over 10 years old and similarly a plan by Edinburgh City Council to prohibit cars more than 15 years old from driving in the city centre.

I believe this would cover all E30s if it were ever to develop beyond a tofu eating think tank.

Should you wish, you may register your objection to this idea here:

I'm sure we could just transplant in more modern engines to get round it? They wouldn't have a leg to stand on. That would exclude the mayor's car (a 88 Bentley I think) in Nottingham!

wouldnt matter if every single person in the country signed up against it. the politicians regard joe public to be to stupid to understand these issues so they ignore majority opinion and carry on as they please regardless.then blame someone else at election time.

thats the point. its so joe public cant afford a new car due to having his wallet squeazed to its limit to pay the ever increasing and way out of sinc with our wage rises ,taxes and charges on everything from council tax to income tax so freeing up the roads for the fat cats and politicians to waft about unhindered on jam free roads without having to be held up by the nuisance public scum in their old bangers.

Yeah, iv realised that now. I posted it up on another forum and i was reassured it will never happen.lol

Quoted:
This will never happen. It would result in loads of lost revenue for the goverment, therefore they'd never do it. Just like banning smoking or drinking which they openly admit are the biggest killers and a massive drain on the health service, but they make too much tax from them so they'll let them remain.

If they banned cars over ten years old, you'd loose the parts suppliers, the specialist garages, the manufaturers of said parts, all the shows, tuning places, race events, specialist shops etc This would result in a lot of lost taxes both in VAT, corporate tax, business rates, and PAYE from wages. There would also be a lot of people put onto the end of the unemployment que.

There would be a national outcry at the fact you couldn't see our motoring herritage on the streets. The scrap yards physically couldn't cope. The second hand car market would be destroyed for anything approaching/past 10 years old while the rest of the market would go through the roof (basic supply and demand principals).

The insurance market would loose a massive amount of revenue and companie would close.

It'll not happen !!!!

If you want a petition to sign, start one for a vote of no confidence in our current Labour Goverment.

Im not exactly positive but someone mentioned something about you can only keep your car for a few years or untill 50000miles but i cant quite believe that as theres quite a big classic car following over there. Not sure how it works.

I remember reading they were doing the same thing in Berlin, which meant the iconic old Trabants were banned from the city centre. Berlin without dirty old Trabants :-(

i think in japan it something like once the car is ten years old the tax goes through the roof, so it makes more sense to sell the car and get a new one.

not 100% sure but something like that.

im not sure on the exact details but i think the rougher the car the higher the tax. i believe even paint defects make it more expensive, hence the amount of imports from japan, particularly to aussie and new zealand.

that will also help the tuning scene. We will have to have niceer old cars on the road so more imagination might go into car tuning :)

Very true! Had them for as long as i can remember!
However they tent to be more pricey in austraila and they didnt get the 'Ghost editions' that we did in nz winkeye

But thats Japan, they have a throw away culture. It also helped the car industry grow to the size it is now id say.

Here in brittion inless you can afford a aston, bentley, range rover etc then you cant really support the industry over here (Rover anyone) in that manner anyway, so the govt cant use japans excuse.

Also if its for, lets say... carbon, glabal warming ect.. then surley if we for example being owners of 10-20 year old cars were made to scrap them and buy newer cars, that would increse carbon more(scraping, newcar, the old owner needs new car, more cars getting made in factorys.. you get the point) than keeping our cars well maintained ond on the road!

Just another tax excuse id say

hmm but that argument assumes that the people making the legislation actually have a clue what they are talking about and understand the implications involved in such a major decision.

british government has none of these things right now, nor are they likely to have it in the near future.

want to swap your passport and identity for mine??

Its mostly because of the Japanese MOT equivalent i believe.

from what i have heard, you have to have the entire braking system replaced (cant remember how often) and other safety related parts like tyres and suspension, so its cheaper to replace the car.

and as already posted thats why we get so many cheap grey imports over here.

the problem is no body offers anything different. the same old ideas, policies and faces but wrapped up in a different coloured party ribbon.
and if they do offer something at election time its quickly forgotten soon after before reverting back to the same old snouts in the trough lining their own pockets routine.
